Brett M. Kavanaugh, Supreme Court justice, says no one person should have too much power

Supreme Court Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh is defending the separation of powers, saying no one person should have too much power in the United States.

Justice Kavanaugh, who was appointed to the court by President Trump in 2018, defended the notion that no one person or group has unchecked power in the U.S. by way of how the Founders designed the federal system of government.

His comments come as critics have said the conservative majority on the bench has sided overwhelmingly with Mr. Trump’s administration in recent months.

“And the framers recognized in a way that I think is brilliant, that preserving liberty requires separating the power. No one person or group of people should have too much power in our system,” Justice Kavanaugh said Thursday at an event honoring the late Kenneth Starr, for whom he had worked.

The Associated Press reported that Justice Kavanaugh appeared at a Texas community college in Waco, outside of Dallas. He had worked under Starr when he served as special counsel investigating then-President Bill Clinton.

Starr’s widow, Alice, told the crowd at McLennan Community College that she was distraught when Justice Kavanaugh was accused of sexual misconduct during his confirmation hearing.

Christine Blasey Ford had accused the justice of assaulting her while they were in high school. He has vehemently denied any wrongdoing.

“Not one bit of negative press was true,” Ms. Starr said.
