A man slipped underwater while swimming in Cockeysville, Maryland, over the weekend, and Baltimore County responders are still trying to find and recover his body.
The 36-year-old swimmer went missing at the Beaver Dam Swimming Club on Sunday, the Baltimore County Fire Department said on social media. The outdoor swimming facility features a pool about 5 feet deep and a deeper quarry area with an average depth of 40 feet.
Neither county fire officials nor the police named the swimmer publicly, but family members identified him to Baltimore’s WMAR-TV as Michael Randle. Mr. Randle’s brother, Terrell Randle, told the TV station that his brother knew how to swim.
Michael Randle is presumed dead, the Baltimore County Police Department said on social media.
Initial search efforts started at around 6 p.m. Sunday when a lifeguard at the club tried to save Mr. Randle but lost sight of him, Baltimore County Fire Department Capt. Lenny Stewart said, according to Baltimore’s WBAL-TV. The search effort that day stopped by 9:30 p.m.
Divers, sonar and underwater robots were unable to find the swimmer Monday, and the search is set to continue Tuesday, the fire department said.
