Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she would be open to speaking with President Trump about issues in her district if he ever called her.
Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, New York Democrat, said she is “going to always advocate for my community and my constituents.”
“I don’t know how productive the conversation would be, but…people are falling off the cliff when it comes to health care. Wages are stagnant, costs are up and there’s so many different ways to tackle that,” she told The Washington Times. “But to be honest … that’s why I’m not calling the president. If he has something productive to contact me about, I’m all ears.”
The liberal firebrand confirmed she would not hang up on Mr. Trump if he were to give her a call, as he did recently with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts Democrat, to discuss affordability issues.
“Yeah, that’s not my style,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said. “That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t chew someone out.”
The Washington Times reached out to the White House for comment.
Mr. Trump may take Ms. Ocasio-Cortez up on her offer. Fellow New York City liberal and rising Democratic Party star Mayor Zohran Mamdani reportedly is texting back and forth with Mr. Trump.
However, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez took a few shots at the president for good measure, saying that she is not surprised he is taking heat from Republicans over an affordability proposal related to capping annual credit card interest rates.
“The impression that I get is that the White House is in a place of great tumult, and I feel like the president is making a lot of decisions that feel like it is sinking in, for them, the degree of broad discontent and disappointment that the American people have in the Trump administration,” she said.
