Abbott Orders Arrest of Flighty Democrats – HotAir

Duane’s post this morning was all about the Texas legislators who’ve gone walkabout in an effort to upend voting on redistricting plans.

The entire lot of them were screaming ‘Trump Trump TRUMPITY TRUMP!!!’ as they boldly stood on the airport tarmac and announced their getaway to the world.

And well, said ‘send us money.’

So, once they got all the photo-ops finished, and took keepsake pics of each other man-posing, they all hopped aboard not a Southwest flight, you peasant-brain.

A nifty little private, Lizzo-going-to-a-Kamala-rally number.

SCHWEET

…This isn’t public service — it’s political theater funded by shady money.

REMOVE them from office. INVESTIGATE for bribery. Texans deserve answers.

Party of the people!

…Most of the state legislators boarded a 76-seat private jet flown out of a “state-of-the-art” private terminal at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, a Washington Free Beacon review of flight logs and photos found. That jet left Austin around 5 p.m. on Sunday and landed in Chicago some two hours later, a flight that likely cost tens of thousands of dollars. Upon arriving in the Windy City, the lawmakers held a press conference alongside Illinois governor and billionaire Hyatt hotel heir J.B. Pritzker (D.), who said Texas Republicans are “attempting to cheat” by redrawing their state’s congressional boundaries to carve out additional districts likely to elect Republicans.

And off they went on their fleabagging protest jaunt to the Land of Pritzker.

Once there, they resumed outrage posing and demanding everything go back the way it was immediately after being met with soothing, welcoming words from the biggest jerrymandering panderer of all as he applauded their heroism.

…We know that you are making great sacrifices to resist the power grab that’s being perpetrated by Donald Trump and Governor Abbott…

The oversized, under-charmed sanctuary state governor is no slouch in the redistricting department. Keep your hands and fingers inside the vehicle when he comes by.

Ed’s great VIP column was about the options Texas Republicans had to get the session back in operating order. Abbott told the fleabaggers they had until this afternoon at three o’clock to have their butts in seats…or else the pain would begin.

There were any number of discussions about what exactly the pain could be and what Abbott could legally inflict. For one, he was threatening each scofflaw with the loss of their seat for ‘abandonment’ as well as a fine of $500 for their continued absence.

As Professor Jonathan Turley noted, all these remedies take time. The fleabaggers know this and may be hoping to wait him out, even though Abbott would most likely eventually prevail. Where Abbott may be able to force the issue is with the fines. Accepting outside monies to pay them, as Democrats are wont to do over most any bill the have to settle, would be tantamount to bribery and he won’t hesitate to charge the flighty Dems for doing so.

That throws a very expensive ball back in their court.

…When the Governor calls a Special Session, the Texas Constitution provides that the “Legislature shall meet.” TEX. CONST. art. III, § 5. The governor is arguing that this is a mandatory duty for legislators. This is where it gets sporty. The Texas Attorney General has issued Opinion No. KP-0382 on the removal of missing Democrats from membership in the Texas House. The Attorney General Ken Paxton maintains that “whether a specific legislator abandoned his or her office such that a vacancy occurred will be a fact question for a court.”

Accordingly he may file a “quo warranto” action, literally an action to determine “by what authority?” does a person still claim office. Under this procedure, Paxton would seek a judicial declaration that these members have abandoned their offices.

In the meantime, the Democrats have responded with their own chest pounding with Pritzker (who hopes to run for the presidency in 2028) declaring that he will protect the fugitive members. He declared this a “righteous act’ by legislators to stop the political process.

This is not the first time that this maneuver has been used. In 2011, Democratic state senators from Wisconsin fled to Illinois to block a vote on removing union rights for public workers. Texas democrats have used this tactic in the past in 1979, 2003, and 2021. It was not successful in prior years in the long run.

Not to be outdone, Abbott is warning that lawmakers accepting assistance or  “soliciting funds to evade the fines they will incur under House rules” could be charged with bribery under state law. He can also order additional special sessions until the Democrats return.

As the standoff escalates, these novel legal questions may be heading to court. The effort to declare members as abandoned will take time and time is short when it comes to redistricting, which is often subject to years of challenges. Democrats are clearly hoping that running out of the state will allow them to run out the clock. They may be right. What may be more likely to succeed is the imposition of massive fines on the legislators.

And then this afternoon, Governor Abbott seemed to decide scorched earth was the way to go, and ordered the arrest of every last one of them.

Abbott declared the fleabaggers had ‘abandoned their duties’ to their constituents, said there were ‘consequences for actions’ (I’m assuming we have moved into the ‘FO phase of this exercise), and told law enforcement to find and arrest them.

Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott ordered state authorities Monday to arrest dozens of House Democrats who fled to Illinois and New York rather than stay for a vote on redrawing the state’s congressional map.

…Moments before Abbott’s announcement, the Texas House of Representatives voted 85-6 to approve a motion to call for the Democrats to come back.

House Speaker Dustin Burrows subsequently directed the chamber’s sergeant at arms “to send for all absentees … under warrant of arrest, if necessary.

To ensure compliance, I ordered the Texas Department of Public Safety to locate, arrest, and return to the House chamber any member who has abandoned their duty to Texans,” Abbott proclaimed. “This order will remain in effect until all missing Democrat House members are accounted for and brought to the Texas Capitol.”

Alrighty then.

The bulk of the miscreants are in Illinois, but there are about half a dozen with Kathy Hochul in New York. Lucky Texas cops (Rangers maybe?) heading to those two hellholes to snag them – yech.

So, stand by for some sincere posturing out of the affected afflicted in Illinois and New York. This should also give potential presidential candidate Pritzker and embattled Hochul plenty of grandstanding airtime, which might well drown out whatever publicity points the Texas chicken littles were hoping to make. That would also be a bonus.

They already look like fools – letting their pathetic stunt get sidetracked by the big dogs would be gravy on the roadkill.

If they have to take the cheap seats on a commercial flight back with a Texas cop keeping them company?

Oh, the visuals are going to be something.

Dear God, may the era of performative theater and ‘if we don’t get what we want, RUN AWAY‘ politics be coming to a close at long last.

Settle in.
