The Justice Department has secured grand jury subpoenas for Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, Gov. Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Fox News reported Tuesday, as the Trump administration ramps up its investigation of state Democrats and anti-ICE protests.
News of the subpoenas for Mr. Walz and Mr. Frey broke last week, but they hadn’t been served yet.
The subpoenas seek documents on what prosecutors say appears to be a conspiracy to gin up anger against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as officers and agents surge into Minnesota on President Trump’s orders.
Mr. Walz, on social media, denounced the probe as “political theater.”
“Minnesotans will not be intimidated into silence and neither will I,” the governor said in a note aimed at the president.
The governor and Mr. Frey have denounced ICE’s presence in Minneapolis and demanded the federal officers leave. Mr. Walz specifically urged residents to track ICE personnel and record them with phones.
