President Trump joked Tuesday that he flirted with renaming the Gulf of Mexico after himself before he settled on the “Gulf of America” as the official new name.
“I thought I would be killed if I did that. I wanted to do it, I wanted to,” Mr. Trump said at a White House briefing. “I decided not to do that.”
Then the president said he was only joking.
“I was not going to call it the ’Gulf of Trump,’” Mr. Trump said, noting the press coverage would have been brutal. “That does have a good ring, though. Maybe we could do that; it’s not too late.”
Mr. Trump started his second term by coming up with the Gulf of America. Google Maps and others quickly adopted the name.
Others, notably The Associated Press, refused to abandon the longtime name of the Gulf of Mexico, resulting in the White House banning the wire service from certain pool reporting duties at the complex or on presidential travel.
