Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has chided President Trump for his “classless” comments on the slaying of Hollywood filmmaker and liberal advocate Rob Reiner.
In a CNN interview Tuesday, Ms. Greene continued her recent feud with the president, calling his remarks “absolutely, completely below the office of the president of the United States.”
Mr. Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, were found stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home on Sunday.
Mr. Trump on Monday posted comments on Truth Social, calling Mr. Reiner “tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star.”
The president said Mr. Reiner was slain “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
The acclaimed director and longtime Democratic donor had repeatedly criticized Mr. Trump.
The couple’s elder son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with his parents’ murders.
Ms. Greene, formerly one of Mr. Trump’s most vocal supporters, pushed back on the president’s comments, describing the situation as “a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies.”
“Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder,” she posted Monday on social media.
Nick Reiner’s drug addiction has become a distinctive talking point in the murder of his parents.
Ms. Greene told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on Tuesday that the president’s supporters, including herself, do not appreciate his comments and wish he had responded with compassion instead.
“Even if you don’t agree with Rob Reiner politically, there was no reason for his statement,” she said.
Ms. Greene, Georgia Republican, has increasingly criticized Mr. Trump, publicly breaking with him on numerous issues.
In late November, she announced her resignation from Congress. Her reasons for leaving office included changes in the Republican Party and wanting more time with her family.
