They Are Globalizing the Intifada – HotAir

For years, the left wing has been chanting “globalize the intifada.” The calls ramped up after the October 7th attack by Hamas, and the chants have grown louder by the day ever since.

This weekend was a banner time for the intifada globalizers, with terrorist attacks happening around the world. As all eyes are on the Bondi massacre in Australia, you may have missed several other stories of Islamists either plotting or succeeding in committing terrorist attacks.

The father-son tandem terrorist attack featured migrants from Pakistan who, if sane people ran Australia, should never have been admitted to the country. In Berlin, five Islamists were arrested for plotting an attack at a Christmas market, which, I suppose, makes Paris look smart for cancelling their Christmas concert over terror concerns.

Five men have been arrested in Germany suspected of being involved in a plot to drive a vehicle into people at a Christmas market.

Three Moroccans, an Egyptian and a Syrian were detained on Friday over the plan to target a market in the southern Bavarian state. Authorities said they suspected an “Islamist motive”.

Prosecutors said the Egyptian – a 56-year-old – was alleged to have “called for a vehicle attack… with the aim of killing or injuring as many people as possible”. The Moroccans allegedly agreed to carry out the attack.

Officials in Germany have been on high alert after previous attacks at Christmas markets, including in Magdeburg last December that killed six people.

Authorities did not say when the planned attack was supposed to take place or which market was the target, though said they believed it to be one in the Dingolfing-Landau area, north east of Munich.

German newspaper Bild reported the Egyptian man was an imam at a mosque in the area.

Police said the Moroccan men – aged 30, 28 and 22 – were arrested accused of having agreed to commit murder, while the Syrian man, a 37-year-old, was accused of encouraging the suspects “in their decision to commit the crime”.

The left views Muslims as inherently victims and white people, including all Jews regardless of their actual skin color, as oppressors. So, in perfect liberal logic, they endorse violence that they think is revolutionary. They may say they deplore violence, but when you add a “but” and justify the motives for it, they are excusing it in these particular cases.

David Frum, with whom I often disagree, has an excellent essay in The Atlantic on the left’s embrace of the “intifada” that is spreading in our societies and taking lives.

When people chant “intifada revolution,” they are revealing something important about their goals and methods. Yet in many Western countries, public authorities have been reluctant—or unwilling—to hear the message.

In May, a pro-Palestinian activist assassinated two people in downtown Washington, D.C. “I did it for Palestine, I did it for Gaza,” he told police according to his federal indictment. The same message appeared on a prescheduled post on his social-media accounts.

In October, two men were killed and three injured in a car-ramming and stabbing attack directed against Yom Kippur worshippers in Manchester, England.

Yet there has remained, until now, terrible reluctance by Western governments to accept the appearance on their soil of deadly threats to their Jewish citizens from people motivated by anti-Israel ideology. Those movements have progressively tested what used to be red lines: blocking access to synagogues, for example, as happened in recent weeks in Los Angeles and New York City. (In New York, the incident drew a statement from Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani that apportioned blame to both the protesters and the synagogue itself.)

After the mass killing in Sydney, facing reality is not merely urgent—it’s inescapable. Symbolic violence is a rehearsal for actual violence. Many in the Western world have interpreted post–October 7 anti-Israel actions within the framework of free speech. Ten days after the terror attacks, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education posted a statement: “Let every participant in the debate over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict show their cards, even those with the most extreme views. And let others marshal arguments and evidence to refute or discredit those views.”

But what if the “extreme view” in question is that Jews should be made to fear death, and the best way to spread that fear is by killing them? How do you marshal arguments and evidence against that proposition?

In a 2021 essay, the prominent anti-Israel academic Steve Salaita rejected those who “speak of rights and democracy and civil liberties and then superimpose those categories onto Palestine. It doesn’t occur to them that Palestine has its own vocabularies of freedom worth forcing into the American conversation.”

It is helpful to possess a lexicon of what is typically intended by these vocabularies. Armed struggle means shooting people or blowing them up with bombs. By any means necessary means targeting the most defenseless: children, the elderly, other civilians. Globalize the intifada means shooting or bombing people in Sydney, London, Paris, Toronto, Los Angeles, and New York City, as well as in Tel Aviv or Jerusalem. From the river to the sea means the annihilation of a sovereign democratic state and the mass murder, expulsion, and enslavement of much of its population.

The left has a love affair with violence, going back to its very roots in the French Revolution. The excuse back then, as it is now, is that it promotes “social justice.” Social Justice is the catch-all excuse for mass murder in the modern world. As long as you can carry a flag with a raised fist and come up with chants to screech in the streets, you are the good guy.

I agree with those who point out that there are many Muslims who are not Islamists. In fact, the man who wrestled the gun away from one of the terrorists in Australia has an Arabic name, although we don’t yet know his religion. The problem is that when you have millions chanting their support for Hamas and the murder of Jews, you can’t ignore that fact and pretend that there isn’t a problem.

And that problem includes everybody who chants “globalize the intifada,” Muslim or not.

None of the people who were murdered this weekend by Islamists has done anything to oppress anybody. They were victimized because they worship the Judeo-Christian God. And, as the thwarted Berlin attack shows, the intended victims are not solely Jews.

Islamism is a totalitarian ideology. Islamists tell us so themselves.

We have to quit virtue signalling about “diversity” and get serious about self-defense. I don’t believe we need a blanket ban on all Muslim immigration, but we surely need far more vetting than we have used up until now.

At least as important, we need to push back on the “globalize the intifada” left here at home. They are telegraphing to us all that they have chosen the side of people determined to kill us.

UPDATE: Known wolf, of course
