President Trump said he’s directed Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Army Secretary Dan Driscoll to meet with Russia and Ukraine, respectively, as he touts “tremendous progress” on ending the war
Ukraine has largely agreed to the U.S.-backed peace plan, with a few minor details that need to be worked out.
“The original 28-Point Peace Plan, which was drafted by the United States, has been fine-tuned, with additional input from both sides, and there are only a few remaining points of disagreement,” Mr. Trump wrote in a lengthy Truth Social post Tuesday.
He said he will be briefed on any progress made from the meeting, along with other administration officials.
The president originally gave Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a Thanksgiving deadline to accept the peace proposal.
“I look forward to hopefully meeting with President Zelenskyy and President Putin soon, but ONLY when the deal to end this War is FINAL or, in its final stages,” he said.
The 28-point plan caused some contention in the U.S. and overseas because critics said it forced Ukraine to give up too much to Russia. A weekend meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, saw some changes to the plan, according to the White House.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow has not seen the latest version of the peace plan and expects the Trump administration to provide more information soon.
