After 40 days of the longest government shutdown in American history, Democrats finally caved Sunday night. They caved without securing a single concession they claimed to be fighting for. And over on MSNBC, the meltdown was a sight to behold on Sunday night.
Eight Democratic senators broke ranks with Chuck Schumer and voted with Republicans to end debate on a continuing resolution to reopen the government through January 30. No extensions for Obamacare subsidies. No wins for their base. Nothing. Just a white flag after more than a month of inflicting pain on federal workers and the American people.
MSNBC columnist Dean Obeidallah couldn’t hide his bewilderment. He pointed out that union workers at the TSA were willing to endure the hardship because they believed Democrats were fighting for health insurance subsidies that would actually help them. But Democrats got exactly nothing in return for all that suffering.
“For 40 days, you shut the government down and now you’re going to open the government up and what did you get in return? Nothing? Nothing?” Obeidallah asked. “After the pain you inflicted, people were willing to take the pain, I talked to union workers from TSA who said, I’ll take the pain, it’s going to help me get health insurance subsidies paid.”
I bet he didn’t. But I digress.
It sure seemed like we were going to be in this for an even longer haul after last week’s election victories emboldened Democrats. Who could have guessed that five days after Democrats swept Virginia’s statewide elections, despite the scandals, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine would be among those voting to end the Schumer Shutdown? Obeidallah couldn’t wrap his head around it. “I don’t know how, and you just won an election on Tuesday, and you lose numbers,” he said. “The Democrats, I don’t understand how a Democratic senator goes, wow, we won really big. Let me cave now. I don’t understand. That makes no sense to me.”

The compromise reverses the layoffs of 4,000 federal workers and schedules a vote on Obamacare subsidy extensions for December—basically exactly what Republicans were calling for weeks ago. Co-host Antonia Hylton summed up what everyone was thinking. “I mean, in a way, it seems like the president is kind of getting what he wanted 40 days ago when all this started,” she said.
Trump is winning again.
Hylton noted that Trump acknowledged after Tuesday’s election that Republicans were taking political damage from the shutdown. But now, he’s back on top. Democrats folded right when they supposedly had momentum and leverage.

Democrats spent 40 days posturing as champions of federal workers and healthcare subsidies. They let TSA agents and other government employees suffer. They disrupted services. They made a big show of standing firm. And then they just gave up. They got nothing. Trump got what he wanted. And the left-wing media is left scratching its head, wondering what just happened.
How does losing feel after all that?
Editor’s Note: After more than 40 days of screwing Americans, a few Dems have finally caved. The Schumer Shutdown was never about principle — just inflicting pain for political points.
