We Can Oppose Government Pressure to Fire Broadcasters AND Laugh at Liberals Who Are Hypocrites – HotAir

Let me say this up front: Shut up, liberals, you have absolutely no right to complain about being subject to “cancel culture” or even using the power of government to pressure people out of their jobs. 





That has been one of the primary tactics of the left for the past decade, and there are numerous examples to support this assertion. 

Gina Carano, Roseanne Barr, J.K. Rowling (who has been excluded from many Harry Potter events by companies that have made billions off her work), as well as countless writers and actors who are less prominent, have been canceled.

The Biden administration funded an entire infrastructure to silence dissent, worked with social media to kick people off their platforms, and tried to create an agency to institutionalize the policies of silencing conservatives. 

And…most of the people crying about this support European anti-free speech laws, and applauded when Trump was kicked off Twitter. Spare me the crocodile tears. 





Democrats cheered on the riots, campaigned to destroy Tesla, and insisted that it wasn’t about censorship but “consequences.” U.S. Senators threatened Twitter and Facebook with increased regulation unless they silenced people countless times. The left-wing worked tirelessly to silence Charlie Kirk by using violence and other pressure to keep Charlie Kirk himself off campus. 

So shut up about free speech. It is shameful. Read Ed’s thoughts here. 

Conservatives have been the advocates for free speech, and we should continue to be. 





As I have written before, I think many of the people who have lied about Charlie and celebrated his death should be fired–the ones who represent institutions and are people in positions of social or economic authority, because they cannot be trusted to do their jobs. A doctor who wants his political opponents dead, or a teacher who is supposed to be modeling civil discourse, should be booted out of their profession summarily. 

And, ABC was right to suspend and would be justified in firing Kimmel. He represents ABC and was a liability for the company. They should have done so long before now. He is vile, and he used his platform to slander a good man admired by millions. 

But…I do think Brendan Carr, who heads the FCC, crossed the line by implicitly using the enormous power implicit in his role to suggest he could punish ABC. In my opinion, it is an abuse of power. 





It was an abuse of power when the Biden administration funded efforts to silence Townhall, Hot Air, and me when it suited them. Biden’s censorship not only reduced my reach but also cost me real money. I hate the left for that. I want to see the malefactors pay a price themselves, but only using tactics that are ethical. 

Yes, turnabout is fair play. Kimmel has been an advocate of cancel culture and imposing even worse consequences for wrongthink. He literally called for the death of conservative COVID patients at the height of the pandemic. In terms of poetic justice, he got what he deserved. I cry no tears for him and wish him a hearty “good riddance.”





But again, we don’t have a government to impose poetic justice. Ordinary citizens ultimately police the Overton Window using common sense. The government should create clearly established rules and enforce them in accordance with the law. 

FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr says Kimmel and Colbert are now facing the consequences of choosing to cater to a narrow, partisan audience.

“You can do that, you can start a podcast, you can go on YouTube…but if you’re going to have a license from the FCC, we expect you to broadly serve the public interest.”

The era of activist late-night TV is collapsing.

“Public interest” is a slippery term when seen through partisan eyes. Is promoting the COVID vaccine using falsehoods in the public interest? I think not, but many thought yes. Clearly, it was in the interest of the public to have the debate, and the broadcast networks didn’t, but I am hesitant to shut them down because my side has the power to do so. That is what the Biden administration did in many cases, at least online. 





Private companies can and should police the speech of people who represent their companies to the public. If the behavior of one of their employees hurts the business, firing them is the smart choice unless doing so hurts them even more. 

Bud Light F’ed around and found out. Jaguar did too. That is how things should work. 

We object to Democrats weaponizing the government, and we should object when Republicans do. 

Jimmy Kimmel is a horrid human being, has no RIGHT to a platform on ABC, and also got what he deserved. But the FCC is not the tool we should use to accomplish that goal.
