There are clarifying moments in life, when a contrast is so stark that it is impossible not to see differences, and the events are so stark that they are impossible to ignore.
Charlie Kirk’s assassination is one such moment for tens of millions of Americans. The media can’t turn away, because everybody in the political media knew Charlie, not just by reputation, but in person. An entire generation of high school and college kids grew up with Charlie because outreach to America’s youth was his vocation, and he was superb at it.
Turning Point USA, which Charlie dropped out of college to found, became one of the biggest political forces because it did what so few political figures or organizations accomplish: change minds through words and by meeting people where they were. Its most important tools were enthusiasm, kindness, and conversation.
Charlie’s great sin was speaking the truth as he saw it. And for that, he was killed.

Why? You have to understand the fundamental principle of modern Critical Theory, which is that words are weapons, and using the wrong words, even if they are “true,” is an act of violence. It shouldn’t shock you that randos on the internet celebrated Kirk’s death, but it should shock everybody that teachers, professors, and Deans of colleges are. They are not random people, but ones who are in positions of responsibility who teach the next generation how to think and behave.

Doctors, nurses, teachers, and liberal politicians all jumped on the bandwagon of celebration, at least until the talking points went out. The most prominent Democrats tried to tamp down the celebrations by, for once, not celebrating the murder openly after Matthew Dowd stepped in it badly enough to get fired. But it takes a while for the activists to get the talking points–long enough that the line troops didn’t get the message.

There will always be bad people who glory in others’ pain, and I don’t get worked up so much by random people being awful. But the fact is that there was an outpouring of hate from people who are responsible for education our kids, healing our wounds and ills (“First, do no harm”), and managing our most important institutions.

It’s hardest to keep to our principles in such times, when fighting such evil. But winning a violent civil war leaves behind a destroyed civilization, which is hardly a victory at all. Lincoln had it right:

Yes, there must be consequences for these evil people. But not in a way that undermines why we fight or turns us into our enemies. Righteous anger is not only justified, but necessary. Killing Charlie was not just an act of violence against a man or a movement, but against civilization itself.
Our anger must be expressed in a manner consistent with preserving our civilization.
For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?
