Assassination and the Watershed Radicalization of the American Right – PJ Media

There are clarifying moments in life, when a contrast is so stark that it is impossible not to see differences, and the events are so stark that they are impossible to ignore. 





Charlie Kirk’s assassination is one such moment for tens of millions of Americans. The media can’t turn away, because everybody in the political media knew Charlie, not just by reputation, but in person. An entire generation of high school and college kids grew up with Charlie because outreach to America’s youth was his vocation, and he was superb at it. 

Turning Point USA, which Charlie dropped out of college to found, became one of the biggest political forces because it did what so few political figures or organizations accomplish: change minds through words and by meeting people where they were. Its most important tools were enthusiasm, kindness, and conversation. 

Charlie’s great sin was speaking the truth as he saw it. And for that, he was killed. 

Why? You have to understand the fundamental principle of modern Critical Theory, which is that words are weapons, and using the wrong words, even if they are “true,” is an act of violence. And, modern leftists believe, violence of this kind should be met with violence in the world. Shooting Charlie Kirk because he said the wrong things wasn’t violence, but self-defense. 





Are you guys noticing how many teachers are celebratory and/or mocking about the assassination of a human being with different opinions.

Teachers. Who adorn their classrooms with inclusivity and diversity propaganda. 

They don’t believe in inclusivity or diversity. 

They believe in the communist ideology of agree, or else. 

Agree, or you’re a Nazi. 

Agree, or you’re a fascist.

Agree, or you’re a racist. 

Agree, or you deserve to be eliminated.

And these are the people teaching children, and college students.

Yes, they see the world that way because, for them, the world is a construct of the mind. Believe something and it is true. Charlie, by persuading people to believe the “wrong” things, is a murderer. 

That is why “deadnaming” is a “violent” act, denying men can become women is “genocide,” and the killing of a lovely father and husband is worth celebrating. Charlie Kirk, in their eyes, is no different from killing Hitler. 

It shouldn’t shock you that randos on the internet celebrated Kirk’s death, but it should shock everybody that teachers, professors, and Deans of colleges are. They are not random people, but ones who are in positions of responsibility who teach the next generation how to think and behave. 





Doctors, nurses, teachers, and liberal politicians all jumped on the bandwagon of celebration, at least until the talking points went out. The most prominent Democrats tried to tamp down the celebrations by, for once, not celebrating the murder openly after Matthew Dowd stepped in it badly enough to get fired. But it takes a while for the activists to get the talking points–long enough that the line troops didn’t get the message. 

Millions of people have been indoctrinated in Critical Theory, and while many liberals have convinced themselves it is about kindness and inclusion, what lies at its core is a revolutionary movement to remake the world by enforcing a totalitarian ideology that cannot brook dissent. 

People with flags in their bios–signaling to the world that they believe all the right things that will ensure kindness in the world–are laughing with joy at the murder of a young man whose only sin was talking to young people about his belief in God, freedom, and America. 





That’s because, for them, their enemies are God, freedom, and America. If people believe in God, in an inescapable Truth that resides outside oneself, it becomes impossible to accept alphabet ideology. That is violence in their view. 

You can see the thinking in this one phrase: “Change my mind went to change my being.” They really believe that. 

Transgender activists are shooting up churches and religious schools because they represent a challenge to the foundations of their existence: by declaring God’s truth, they are undermining the left’s truth. The very idea that we are made in God’s image challenges the godlike power of the mind. 

You and I may think that “Nazi” means something specific, but in their worldview view “Nazi” just means “somebody I disagree with and worthy of death.”

There will always be bad people who glory in others’ pain, and I don’t get worked up so much by random people being awful. But the fact is that there was an outpouring of hate from people who are responsible for education our kids, healing our wounds and ills (“First, do no harm”), and managing our most important institutions. 





We think of doctors and teachers as being caregivers and guardians of civilization, but if they are steeped in Critical Theory, they are dedicated to destroying it. 

If you have marveled at the attacks on speech and debate, you still haven’t grasped how totalitarian the left is these days. They are at war with us because they are at war with independent thought, and even with the idea that an independent reality exists. 

In the face of an ideology so twisted, our most powerful tool is ideas. Nothing is more dangerous than freedom of thought when fighting a totalitarian ideology. That is why they saw Charlie Kirk as such a dangerous enemy. 

We are fighting for the American ideal, and not simply our lives. 

In his inaugural address on becoming Governor of California reminded us of our responsibility to preserve the American ideal:





To a number of us, this is a first and hence a solemn and a momentous occasion, and yet, on the broad page of state and national history, what is taking place here is almost a commonplace routine. We are participating in the orderly transfer of administrative authority by direction of the people. And this is the simple magic of the commonplace routine, which makes it a near miracle to many of the worlds inhabitants. This continuing fact that the people, by democratic process, can delegate power, and yet retain the custody of it.

Perhaps you and I have lived too long with this miracle to properly be appreciative. Freedom is a fragile thing and it’s never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by way of inheritance; it must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people.  And those in world history who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again.

Knowing this, it’s hard to explain those among us who even today would question the people’s capacity for self- government. I’ve often wondered if they will answer, those who subscribe to that philosophy: if no one among us is capable of governing himself, then who among us has the capacity to govern someone else?

He spoke those words in 1967, during another fraught time in our history, just as Lincoln spoke of having malice toward none in the midst of a civil war. 

It’s hardest to keep to our principles in such times, when fighting such evil. But winning a violent civil war leaves behind a destroyed civilization, which is hardly a victory at all. Lincoln had it right:

“With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation’s wounds; to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan–to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves, and with all nations.”





I am angry. I have been angry for years at what is being done to our country–much more than I am angry at the hate that is directed toward me and mine. 

Yes, there must be consequences for these evil people. But not in a way that undermines why we fight or turns us into our enemies. Righteous anger is not only justified, but necessary. Killing Charlie was not just an act of violence against a man or a movement, but against civilization itself. 

Our anger must be expressed in a manner consistent with preserving our civilization. 

 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?
