D.C. National Guard vehicle hits car in Washington, driver hospitalized with minor injuries

A D.C. National Guard military vehicle collided with a civilian car in Southeast Wednesday morning, injuring the car’s driver.

The crash happened at Eighth Street and North Carolina Avenue SE, the D.C. Fire and EMS Department said. First responders extricated the driver of the car from the wreckage and took the injured person to a hospital.

District fire officials did not name the victim or specify that a military vehicle was involved. Around 1,900 troops are working in the District as part of President Trump’s anti-crime directive, according to The Associated Press.

The D.C. National Guard told Fox News that a mine-resistant ambush-protected all-terrain vehicle, part of a five-vehicle convoy, hit a civilian car at 6:14 a.m.

“The five-vehicle convoy and a D.C. Metropolitan Police cruiser stopped and rendered aid to the civilian … This is currently undergoing an investigation. The D.C. National Guard and (Joint Task Force-DC) remains committed to the safety of our service members and the public,” a D.C. National Guard spokesperson told Fox News.

In a purported video of the scene of the accident posted to Reddit, a woman commented, “you come into our city, and this is what you do?!”

In addition to the District’s own personnel, National Guard contingents from Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and West Virginia are involved in the public safety efforts, as are personnel from other law enforcement agencies.

The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $500 reward for tips that lead to arrests in the District, per a post from the federal law enforcement agency on social media.
