A Ukrainian sniper team reportedly broke the world record for the longest confirmed fatal shot last week, killing two Russian soldiers from a distance of more than 4,000 meters, or nearly 2.5 miles, according to the Kyiv Post newspaper.
The sniper team on Thursday used a domestically produced “Alligator” sniper rifle to kill the Russian soldiers from more than 13,000 feet away while operating in Pokrovsk, in Ukraine’s Donetsk region.
The sniper team used drones and artificial intelligence to target the Russian soldiers inside a building. “The bullet went through the window behind which the occupiers were standing,” according to the Kyiv Post.
The fatal sniper shot occurred amid intensified Russian attacks in the disputed sector, where Russia is thought to have deployed about 110,000 troops and has reportedly breached Ukrainian defensive lines.
“However, the Ukrainian military said on Friday that the situation is under control,” the Kyiv Post reported.
The previous world record for longest fatal shot occurred in November 2023, when a sniper with the Security Service of Ukraine hit a target from more than 4,000 yards using a locally made “Lord of the Horizon” rifle, the newspaper reported.
