Elon Musk is calling for a new political party to rise if Republicans pass President Trump’s “big beautiful bill” through Congress, and is also vowing to target lawmakers who back the bill in primary elections next year.
“If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day,” Mr. Musk said on X. “Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE.”
The post from Mr. Musk came a couple of hours after he warned that “every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!”
“And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” he said.
Mr. Musk has been highly critical of Mr. Trump’s signature economic proposal, which extends the 2017 tax cuts, increases spending on border security and the military, and trims future Medicaid spending.
His primary beef has centered on the fact that the bill is projected to add trillions of dollars to the already mountainous national debt.
In a short period, Mr. Musk has gone from being the frontman of Mr. Trump’s efforts to scale back federal spending and the federal workforce through the Department of Government Efficiency to showering criticism on his “big beautiful bill.”
Mr. Trump and other Republicans have attributed Mr. Musk’s criticism to the administration’s push to end government subsidies for electric vehicles and the president not selecting the billionaire’s desired pick to lead NASA.
“Elon was ’wearing thin,’ I asked him to leave, I took away his EV Mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted (that he knew for months I was going to do!), and he just went CRAZY!” Mr. Trump said recently on Truth Social.
