Ukraine, Poland add details about assassination attempt on Zelenskyy

The Security Service of Ukraine revealed more specifics about an attempt on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s life foiled last month.

Head of the Security Service of Ukraine, Vasyl Malyuk, on Monday said the attempt to murder Mr. Zelenskyy in the Polish city of Rzeszow was stopped by his agency in cooperation with Poland’s Internal Security Agency.

Polish authorities arrested a Pole in April and indicted the man on espionage charges for aiming to kill Mr. Zelenskyy at Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport on behalf of the Russian government.

The man, identified by Polish media only as Pawel K., reportedly considered various options for the assassination, including using a sniper rifle or an explosive drone.

Polish Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak confirmed that the accused was hit with espionage charges for trying to “cooperate with the Russian [security] services.”

“The findings of the investigation indicate that Pawel K. declared readiness to act for the benefit of the Russian GRU [military intelligence agency],” Interior Ministry spokesman Jacek Dobrzynski wrote. “His tasks were to include, among others, gathering information about Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport.”
