Late Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay’s eldest daughter expected to take over football operations

Carlie Irsay-Gordon, the eldest daughter of Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, is expected to take over control of the team’s football operations following his death Wednesday at the age of 65.

Mr. Irsay’s three daughters — Ms. Irsay-Gordon, 44, Casey Foyt and Kalen Jackson — will co-own the Colts, according to the Indianapolis Star. All three have served as vice chairs of the team.

The three sisters will become the youngest owners in the NFL, just as their father was in 1997, when he took over at the age of 37 upon the death of his father, Robert Irsay in 1997. Mr. Irsay originally was the team’s general manager, named to the position in 1984 after the team moved from Baltimore.

Ms. Irsay-Gordon previously handled football operations in 2014 while Mr. Irsay went through rehab and served a six-game suspension from the league following an arrest for driving while intoxicated.

The Colts and local authorities have not disclosed Mr. Irsay’s cause of death.

“We are devastated to announce our beloved Owner & CEO, Jim Irsay, passed away peacefully in his sleep this afternoon. … Jim’s generosity can be felt all over Indianapolis, the state of Indiana and the country. … Simply put, he wanted to make the world a better place and that philosophy never wavered. Jim will be deeply missed by his family, the Colts organization, and fans everywhere, but we remain inspired by his caring and unique spirit,” the team wrote on social media.
