Woman arrested for driving into festival in Laurel, Maryland

A woman accused of driving a car through a crowd of people at a festival in Laurel, Maryland, on Saturday has been ordered to remain in jail until her trial.

Kai Deberry-Bostick, 28, has been charged with misdemeanor counts of second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, failure to obey a reasonable and lawful request, and two counts of resisting arrest, according to court records.

Body camera footage from the Laurel Police Department shows Ms. Deberry-Bostick telling officers who had stopped her at the Main Street Festival,  “I got to go to work. What do you want me to do?” She removed police tape and other barriers to reach the street.

Officers apprehended her shortly after she drove into the crowd. No people attending the festival were hurt in the incident, while an LPD officer suffered a minor injury after being hit by her car, the police said in a release.

Ms. Deberry-Bostick maintained her innocence, telling officers “I don’t see what I did wrong,” according to court documents cited by WTOP-FM.

A judge ruled at a bail hearing on Monday that she will stay in jail and be held without bond. Her trial is scheduled for July 18.

Ms. Deberry-Bostick’s short drive was not the only dangerous incident at Saturday’s event.

Earlier in the day, a propane tank exploded while a vendor was preparing equipment, leaving one man with serious injuries that were not life-threatening. As a result, the parade scheduled for 9 a.m. as part of the festival was canceled, WUSA-TV reported.
