A Brazilian nun who was the world’s oldest living person at 116 years old died this week. A British woman, currently 115 years old, is now the world’s oldest.
Sister Inah Canabarro was a member of the Brazilian branch of the Society of St. Teresa of Jesus. She was born in 1908, though there is a debate over her exact date of birth — the religious order listed her birth date as May 27, while the LongeviQuest organization that verified her as being the oldest living person has it as June 8.
In a Facebook post, the religious order wrote, “Today, Sister Inah Canabarro embraces the resurrection, we give thanks for her donation and surrender, we ask that the Lord, Father of goodness, receive her and welcome her into his infinite love,” as translated from Portuguese by Google.
Ms. Canabarro spent more than 80 years as a nun, entering the order in Montevideo, Uruguay, at the age of 19, according to the Catholic News Agency. As a nun, Ms. Canabarro was a school teacher and the founder of a marching band in Santana do Livramento, Brazil.
The oldest person in the world is now Ethel Caterham, who is 115 years old. The Surrey, U.K., resident doesn’t get the fuss, according to the BBC.
Her secret to longevity is “never arguing with anyone. I listen and I do what I like,” she told the BBC in August, when she turned 115.
