Poll shows voters give Trump low marks on economic plan, approve of his border policies

Voters are giving President Trump dour reviews on his handling of inflation and the economy, but they are satisfied with his approach to immigration and securing the border, according to a Fox News poll released Thursday.

On immigration, 47% approve of Mr. Trump’s policy — a record high for the poll — while 48% disapprove, as he nears the first 100 days of his presidency.

He received his best polling on border security, with 55% approving.

However, Mr. Trump has a new low of 38% approval on the economy and 56% disapproval, and his worst ratings are on inflation, with 33% approval and 59% disapproval.

His signature policy on tariffs has 33% approval and 58% disapproval; his foreign policy has 40% approval to 54% disapproval; his tax policy is underwater, 38% to 53%; and his policy on guns has 41% approval and 44% disapproval from voters.

The Fox News poll comes in the wake of a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Wednesday, which found 37% of Americans approve of Mr. Trump’s handling of the economy.

It was Mr. Trump’s worst rating ever on the economy in Reuters/Ipsos polling, dating back to the start of his first presidency. Ipsos polled 4,306 people from April 16-21.

Overall, Mr. Trump’s job-approval performance in the Fox survey is at 44%, which is down five points since March in the same poll.

The Washington Times reached out to the White House for comment.

Mr. Trump has defended his tariff policy by saying that his policy worked during his first term, particularly the tariff deals he set up for U.S. farmers, but that the Biden administration led those deals “astray” because the agreements were not enforced.

Mr. Trump also has said that Americans may experience economic “short-term” pain or disruption from his tariff policy, but that the country will ultimately understand because more manufacturing companies will return to the U.S., and prices on goods and materials will eventually come down.

In the meantime, the White House is touting 18 proposals for trade deals following the implementation of its latest tariffs.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and others on the president’s trade team met with representatives of 34 nations this week alone.

“We are moving at Trump speed to ensure these deals are made on behalf of the American worker and the American people.”
