Comer Reminds Bondi the Biden DoJ Never Did Anything w/ the Cuomo Criminal Referral – HotAir

Oh, well, lookee what we have here – a gentle nudge from House Oversight Committee Chair Rep James Comer.

It seems that flashy Andrew Cuomo, disgraced randy man-about-town former governor of New York, reviled as the murderer of thousands of helpless, fragile nursing home patients during COVID, and front runner in the current New York mayor’s race forgot one teensy little thing as he began his slick return to the cesspool of politics he used to ooze through so effortlessly.

He lied to Congress, and the Democrats are no longer in power to protect him.

What makes it really awkward is that Republicans have not forgotten. Nor has it slipped their minds that they sent a criminal referral to the Biden Department of Justice in 2024 about that very mendacity during official, sworn testimony, and it was blown off by Merrick Garland’s DOJ.

Comer, a Kentucky Republican, accused Cuomo, a Democrat now running for New York City mayor, of making “making criminally false statements” around the state’s management of the pandemic in nursing homes. Former Rep. Brad Wenstrup, the chair of the now-disbanded House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, had previously referred Cuomo to former Attorney General Merrick Garland for prosecution — a request that the Biden administration appeared to ignore.

…Cuomo has sought to direct blame elsewhere for his March 25, 2020 nursing home directive, which required elder care facilities to accept Covid-positive patients. Yet his rivals in the mayoral primary to challenge sitting Mayor Eric Adams have banded together to highlight Cuomo’s decision to expose a vulnerable population to the deadly virus, and accuse him of undercounting the deaths in elder care facilities that occurred as a result.

Cuomo defended himself at a congressional hearing last year, telling lawmakers that “all credible studies now say that COVID came into nursing homes through community spread and infected staff, not hospital admissions or readmission.”

But now Cuomo will find himself having to relitigate the allegations waged by House Republicans during that time. The original prosecutorial referral sent by Wenstrup, who is now serving on President Donald Trump’s Intelligence Advisory Board, alleged that Cuomo lied to Congress during a transcribed interview with the select panel. Cuomo claimed he was not involved in a New York State Department of Health report on the nursing home crisis, but the Republican-led panel concluded Cuomo did, in fact, seek to alter the report as part of an effort to cover up the fallout.

Rep Comer dusted off the referral, wrote himself a new cover letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and sent it on over this afternoon.

…“Andrew Cuomo is a man with a history of corruption and deceit, now caught red-handed lying to Congress during the Select Subcommittee’s investigation into the COVID-19 nursing home tragedy in New York.”

“This wasn’t a slip-up—it was a calculated cover-up by a man seeking to shield himself from responsibility for the devastating loss of life in New York’s nursing homes. Let’s be clear: lying to Congress is a federal crime. Mr. Cuomo must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The House Oversight Committee is prepared to fully cooperate with the Justice Department’s investigation into Andrew Cuomo’s actions and ensure he’s held to account.”

This is pretty darn delicious.

His ‘deliberate, self-serving effort to dodge responsibility.’

After the Biden Justice Department refused to act, today House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) resent a criminal referral to the Attorney General Pam Bondi recommending former New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo be charged with making false statements to Congress. Evidence and witness testimony gathered suggest Mr. Cuomo knowingly and willfully made false statements to the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic on numerous occasions about material aspects of New York’s COVID-19 nursing home disaster and the ensuing cover-up. The Select Subcommittee’s investigation exposed Mr. Cuomo’s deliberate, self-serving effort to dodge responsibility for the thousands of lives lost in New York’s nursing homes during the pandemic.

There has been so much heartache and pain because of this slick operator and he is on the cusp of grasping power again.

How could New Yorkers be so stupid…she asks into the void.

As Fox’s weather guru, Janice Dean, who lost her much-loved in-laws to COVID and suffered through the worst of Cuomo’s policies and lies, said, ‘We had no idea thousands of COVID-positive patients were being forced into nursing homes…’

By Andrew Cuomo, governor of New York.

Who would lie about it repeatedly, blame others, and then do the same years later in sworn testimony before a Congressional committee.

Dean has fought him fearlessly with the truth ever since, as have others.

Cuomo has been caught repeatedly trying to shift responsibility for his ghastly, deadly policies, even as he reaped praise for his briefings during the pandemic.

And giving the numbers a favorable shake.

…Those edits included a note stating that by the date the nursing home mandate was rescinded “the disease was already in the nursing homes” — and crossing out the word “death” to replace it with the approximate timeline it took for infections to become fatalities, among others.

“New York is 6,600?” Cuomo scrawled in the margins of one draft page — despite more than 9,000 perishing when counting those who were in hospitals. The final report cited just 6,432 fatalities.

He wanted to keep that sun shining on him, because he could see a White House in his future if he pulled this off.

…Ex-Cuomo staffer Farrah Kennedy told the House subcommittee in a transcribed interview last October that she recognized Cuomo’s handwriting and “often” had to decipher and transcribe it.

Other gubernatorial aides such as Melissa DeRosa and Jim Malatras, along with New York Department of Financial Services deputy superintendent Gareth Rhodes, said in similar interviews that a June 7, 2020, email chain worrying about the death count becoming a “great debacle in the history books,” was most likely dictated by Cuomo to his then-secretary Stephanie Benton.

“Documents prove Mr. Cuomo’s testimony to be false,” Wenstrup had written in his signed cover letter to Garland.

The House Republican probe followed an earlier impeachment report written up by the New York State Assembly Judiciary Committee that found corroborating evidence of Cuomo meddling in the nursing home report to “combat criticism” and defend his initial March 25, 2020, order.

Now it looks as if Cuomo could hopefully have an indictment to deal with as well as fellow indict-ee Eric Adams in the NYC mayor’s race.

There are so many angry people who have waited a long time for the day, if it happens.

So much agony and heartbreak.

And flat out cruelty.

Because he could.

Let this happen and let it be, at long last, the start of accounting for the COVID sins.

There must be a reckoning.
