Following the death of Pope Francis, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene suggested on Monday that global power dynamics were shifting under divine influence.
“Today there were major shifts in global leaderships. Evil is being defeated by the hand of God,” the Georgia Republican wrote on X.
Ms. Greene’s social media post came hours after the Vatican confirmed the pope’s death and as other prominent global figures made headlines, such as Klaus Schwab, founder of the World Economic Forum, announcing his resignation after 50 years leading the organization’s board.
Ms. Greene has frequently criticized Mr. Schwab and the WEF, accusing the group of promoting a globalist agenda.
The Washington Times contacted Ms. Greene’s office Monday afternoon for comment.
Though now an Evangelical Protestant, Ms. Greene has said she was “born into the church.” She later left Catholicism, citing what she called the church’s failure to safeguard children from clergy abuse.
“I could not trust the church leadership to protect my children from pedophiles,” she said in an interview then.
A staunch ally of President Trump, Ms. Greene has previously drawn sharp condemnation for her remarks about the Catholic Church. In a 2022 interview with Church Militant, she said the church’s work with illegal immigrants reflected demonic influence.
“Satan’s controlling the church,” Ms. Greene said then.
Her 2022 remarks were denounced by the Catholic League and others in the religious community, with the League’s president, Bill Donohue, accusing Greene of “slandering Catholics and Catholicism.”
Ms. Greene responded by demanding a public apology. “Nothing could be further from the truth,” she said.
