Marjorie Taylor Greene stands by her belief that earthquakes, eclipses are God’s call to repent

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene isn’t backing down from her view that recent earthquakes and the pending eclipse are signs from God that Americans need to repent.

“Many have mocked and scoffed at this post and even put community notes,” Ms. Greene, Georgia Republican, wrote on social media. “Jesus talked about that in Luke 12:54-56.”

“Yes eclipses are predictable and earthquakes happen and we know when comets are passing by, however God created all of these things and uses them to be signs for those of us who believe,” she said.

Ms. Greene‘s original statement came in an X post after an earthquake struck New Jersey and was felt in New York and Pennsylvania, shocking people since it happens infrequently in the region.

On Monday, a large swath of the U.S. will experience a total solar eclipse. The next one won’t be for another 20 years.

Ms. Greene said the earthquakes and eclipses are God “sending America strong signs to tell us to repent.”

Her post garnered backlash and even got a community note added to clarify that earthquakes happen “all the time, all around the world” and can be tracked.

“Eclipses are not random, they follow strict mathematical rules and can be predicted centuries before they happen. NASA has a site listing eclipses until the year 3000,” the community note said on her Friday post.
