Democratic Socialists like to argue that they do not represent the old models of socialism, such as those implemented in the Soviet Union. DSA advocates like to point to supposedly beneficent socialism in Europe and in South America as the model they plan to install in the US if elected into office.
So why do they keep promoting Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin?
CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski did what most other mainstream media journalists have not bothered to do: research. The K-File reporter dug into the public statements of newly minted Democrat congressional nominee Darializer Chevalier and discovered her ideological idols are the same as, well, every other socialist’s idols. All hail Marx, Lenin, and Stalin – and it actually gets worse:
Darializa Avila Chevalier, the Democratic congressional nominee endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who ousted longtime Rep. Adriano Espaillat in Tuesday’s primary, maintained a since-deleted Twitter account with repeated sympathetic references to communism, Marxist ideology and Soviet figures, including Vladimir Lenin.
Avila Chevalier, a sociology PhD student whose victory sent shockwaves throughout the Democratic establishment, has been under fire for a since-deleted Twitter account, previously reported by CNN, that included phrases such as “seize the means of production,” along with calls to abolish police, prisons and borders. Other controversial tweets include one that said Black and Arab men are both “Fetishizing ugly colonizer women” and another that described wiping her dirty hands on the American flag in lieu of a napkin.
Oh yes, she is a charmer! Racist, sexist, and as it turns out, anti-Semitic too. She’s the whole Leftist package!
As an undergraduate, Avila Chevalier attended Columbia University, where she organized with Students for Justice in Palestine, and after graduation became involved in pro-Palestinian campus protests over Israel’s war in Gaza. She also attended a controversial October 8, 2023, pro-Palestinian rally in Times Square — one day after Hamas’ attack on Israel — that featured speeches and rhetoric praising the attack.
Again, DSA and generic-socialist apologists insist that New Improved Socialism is nothing like earlier models of the ideology. Chevalier’s social media track record belies that propaganda. Posting on Twitter as “Darializabonet” up until 2022, Chevalier promoted the traditional pantheon of communist leaders, Kaczynski discovered:
The account’s bio read in 2020, “how communist of you.” Archived posts and retweets during this timeframe included a recommendation that Karl Marx’s Capital was an “essential must-read,” a complaint that public libraries did not carry enough Marxist literature by Lenin and other revolutionary writers, and a retweet from a Communist-identifying account lamenting that bookstore “banned books” displays did not include The Complete Works of J. V. Stalin.
One archived retweet from 2020 quoted Assata Shakur, the former Black Liberation Army member who, in 1977, was convicted in the murder of a New Jersey state trooper before later escaping prison and fleeing to Cuba. In the quote, Shakur said she “preferred Ho Chi Minh, Kim Il Sung, Che, or Fidel (Castro)” before studying Marx and Lenin because the two “white dudes” had made contributions to “revolutionary struggle” that were “too great to be ignored.”
Lest we forget, Ernesto “Che” Guevara was a murderer, as well as a racist and homophobe who tortured his victims before killing them. Fidel Castro employed Guevara to suppress the Cuban people. Kim Il-sung established a weird, cult-of-personality hereditary dictatorship, built on a socialist foundation, that persists to this day in oppressing millions of Koreans. Stalin committed genocides against the Ukrainians and other peoples in the miserable Soviet sphere of control, not to mention murdering thousands of others in purges, often run by the entirely despicable Lavrenti Beria, who also used his power to prey on women and girls until finally being killed after Stalin’s death. Stalin called Beria “our Himmler,” and not in an ironic way.
These are the heroes of Darializer Chevalier, and the heroes of the DSA. The DSA and its candidates aspire to remake America into the societies created by Stalin, Fidel, Che, the Kims, not the Norwegian and Swedish flirtations with socialism. That is the vision offered by Chevalier and the DSA, which increasingly controls the Democrat Party – not of beneficent communal policies but flat-oust communist totalitarianism. That is what their heroes championed, and that is what they wish to impose on the US.
And you better believe that they will use their own Guevaras and Berias to sustain their grip on power if they succeed in winning elections.
Matt Taibbi is not fooled at all about the DSA surge in the Democrat Party. He sees it for exactly what it is – nascent revolution in a literal sense:
What happened this week is being described in many places as a big win for populist or “anti-elite” politics, but it’s the opposite. This was simulteneously a wipeout of Clintonian party hacks and Bernie’s staid F.D.R.-style big tent politics, in favor of a slickly marketed revolution with a young ethnic vibe. The Zohran movement is an obvious elite fixation, built atop the exotically batshit boutique ideas that America’s nitwit rich find thrilling, like publicly funded “gender-affirming care,” “humanity has no borders,” and my personal favorite, “the institution of the family acts as part of the carceral system.”
If the Sanders campaign was a referendum on the presidency of Barack Obama, the Zohran/DSA revolution is a referendum on America itself, led by people who aren’t the least bit embarrassed to tell you they hate this place, to point of viewing our government as an extension of the Israeli state, whose people deserved 9/11. There’s a smorgasbord of statements by DSA folk along those lines, led by charming Mamdani pal Hasan Piker:

That’s the difference between the Sanders movement and this new tidal wave. Sanders loved every inch of Vermont and was desperate to implement ameliorative social reforms he sincerely believed would turn around a country and a government he revered, borders and all. His platform was designed to fit in the American system, only with government acting as a tougher negotiator for the ordinary person.
The Zohran revolution, meanwhile, is a whole-hog, fuck-it, real-thing version of Marxian socialism, instantly recognizable to anyone who’s ever lived in a socialist country.
In other words, this is not a drill. These are real Marxist revolutionaries taking over the Democrat Party, and Democrat leadership appears either unwilling to stop them or outright choosing the revolution.
