In the wild, female elephants are known for the way they protect one another. When a member of the herd is vulnerable or injured, the others gather around her, forming a tight circle. They face outward, standing shoulder to shoulder, shielding the one in the center until the danger passes and she is strong enough to continue.
I have been thinking about that circle lately. Serving as President of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism has shown me that leadership is never about one person. What makes an organization thrive is the community that surrounds it. Over the course of this term, my circle grew larger than I could have ever imagined. It stretched across Sisterhood Affiliates, Regions and international borders, across committees and communities. Some in the circle were women I had known for years. Others entered my life during this term. Together, they created the circle that sustained me.
Everything we accomplished over the past three years was possible because of people who stepped forward to share their talents, time, and energy. Committee chairs planned programs and tackled challenges. Region and Sisterhood Affiliate leaders strengthened connections and supported their Affiliates. Board Members, staff, and volunteers devoted countless hours to advancing our mission. Most of that work happened quietly, behind the scenes, but it is the reason Women’s League remains strong.
Of course, like in every administration, there were challenges along the way. We faced difficult decisions, changing circumstances, and moments when the path forward was not entirely clear. Yet whenever a problem arose, someone stepped forward with an idea, a solution, or simply a willingness to help. I never felt alone because I never was. The circle held.
Looking back, I am filled with gratitude for all that we accomplished together. We strengthened Women’s League in countless ways, creating opportunities for learning, leadership, connection, and growth. More important than any individual achievement is the knowledge that Women’s League remains vibrant, resilient, and prepared for the future. None of that happened because of any one person. It happened because dedicated women worked together toward a common goal.
As I am preparing for this transition to a new administration under the amazing Pam Schlosberg, I do so with complete confidence. To the incoming leadership team: you are not just inheriting positions or portfolios, you are inheriting a circle of people who already know how to protect what matters and carry each other through hard times. Trust them. Let them stand with you the way they stood with me. To every Officer, Board Member, Region Leader, Committee Chair, staff member, and volunteer who shared this journey with me, thank you. Thank you for your partnership, your encouragement, and your friendship. Most of all, thank you for being part of the circle. Serving as your president has been one of my greatest honors.
I am not really leaving the circle. I am simply moving to a different place within it. As new leaders step into the center, I will be standing beside all of you, facing outward, ready to do my part.
For that privilege, and for each of you, I will always be grateful.
Shabbat Shalom,
