A meteor caused a loud boom that was heard across much of the East Coast on Saturday when it entered the atmosphere and exploded just north of Boston, news outlets report.
The boom shook buildings in Massachusetts and Rhode Island around 2:10 p.m.
The American Meteor Society identified the source as a roughly 3-foot-wide meteor that entered the atmosphere near the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border and broke apart.
NASA confirmed it was a daytime bolide, which is a bright exploding meteor. The space agency said the energy released in the meteor’s breakup was equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT.
The meteor landed in Massachusetts’ Cape Cod Bay.
People from Canada to the southern U.S. reported hearing the boom, and some even felt the ground shake. Some reported seeing the fireball streak across the sky.
It is unlikely that any fragments of the meteorite will be recovered since it landed in the ocean.
