Utz recalls Zapp’s, Dirty brand potato chips over salmonella risk

Utz Quality Foods is voluntarily recalling several varieties of Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips sold nationwide over concerns that the products may be contaminated with salmonella.

The recall, announced Monday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, affects chips whose seasoning contains dry milk powder sourced from California Dairies Inc. and supplied through a third-party vendor. The powder may harbor salmonella bacteria, the FDA said. Although the affected seasoning batches tested negative for the pathogen before use, Utz said it is recalling the products out of an abundance of caution following a separate recall issued by the ingredient supplier.

No illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled products, according to the company.

The recall covers three Zapp’s flavors — Bayou Blackened Ranch, Salt and Vinegar and Big Cheezy — in bag sizes ranging from 1.5 ounces to 8 ounces, as well as three Dirty brand flavors: Salt and Vinegar, Maui Onion and Sour Cream and Onion, all in 2-ounce bags. All affected products carry best-by dates in July or August 2026 and were available at retail stores across the country. No other Utz products are included in the recall.

Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals who contract the bacteria may experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can spread to the bloodstream, leading to more severe conditions, including arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

Consumers who have the recalled chips should not eat them and should discard any remaining product, the FDA said. Those seeking a refund or with additional questions may contact Utz’s customer care team by phone at 1-877-423-0149, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time.
