Man.
You have to give Ursula Von der Leyen, her European Union henchmen, and the former toadies of USAID director Samantha Power credit for effort. They worked their asses off to make sure an EU-skeptic did not win the Romanian presidency last year.
And I mean, they pulled out all the stops.
In 2024, a reportedly Russia-friendly, far-right, underdog candidate named Calin Georgescu shocked the world by coming in first in the initial round of presidential voting.
Two days before the run-off election in December of that year, the Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the results of the entire election, ruling that there had been significant ‘Russian interference’ on behalf of Georgescu on social media sites like TikTok and Telegram.
They said it was time for a do-over.
Instead of a runoff, they’ll have a rerun. On Friday, Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the results of the country’s first-round presidential election, in which dark horse candidate Calin Georgescu won the most votes. The court’s order that the presidential electoral process must be “entirely redone” comes after Romanian President Klaus Iohannis declassified intelligence reports alleging a Russian interference campaign geared toward benefiting Georgescu on TikTok and Telegram.
That delay conveniently gave authorities time to whip up a case against Georgescu.
In March, leading in the polls with over 40%, the candidate was on his way to register for the new round of elections when he was snatched up by the authorities.
…A little over a week ago, Georgescu was on his way to register for the new elections in mid-May when he was snatched up by police, taken to the station for interrogation, and, shortly thereafter, disqualified from running at all by the Romanian election commission.
They also unilaterally banned a female candidate who’d spoken out against Romanian membership in the EU.
I believe this is called ‘clearing the decks.’
And it was time to pick a suitable substitute. That turned out to be the number four guy on the ballot, another nationalist, right-wing kind of fellow by the name of George Simion. Voters were fine with him and getting pretty pissed off at the entire evolution so far.
Romania reran its presidential election after the first was unlawfully scrapped because the “wrong guy” won.
And guess what? Another “far-right extremist” came out on top.

It didn’t take long for an investigation into Simion’s finances to be announced.
Oh, yeah. Simion is already ‘under investigation.’
That’s all they need to pull the lever. https://t.co/aAIo2RyXtJ

For the entire year of 2024-25, the European Union was actively involved in doing its level best to compromise the Romanian elections, one of eight national elections it has been credibly accused of influencing to turn in its favor. USAID also had its filthy paws at work there.

So, Simion is poised to become the next Romanian president in the spring of 2025.
On 18 May, Simion won the first round by a wide margin, with over 40% of the vote against his challengers.
…Simion had a significant lead following the first round of the election on 4 May 2025, winning 41% of the vote. Dan was in second place with 21% of the vote, finishing narrowly ahead of Antonescu.
His popularity had the EU spooked.
Romania’s far-right candidate George Simion took a comfortable lead in Sunday’s first round of presidential elections, near-final results for the rerun of last year’s annulled ballot showed.
The closely watched rerun could potentially herald a foreign policy shift in the EU country of 19 million, which has become a key pillar of NATO since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
With 99 percent of ballots counted, nationalist AUR party leader Simion — a fan of US President Donald Trump — was leading with 40.5 percent of the vote.
He will face off against pro-EU Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan in the May 18 run-off, who surged to second place at 20.9 percent, narrowly booting out governing coalition candidate Crin Antonescu at 20.3.
“Together we made history today,” said Simion in a video message broadcast at his party’s headquarters as euphoric supporters chanted “Out with the thieves, let patriots come.”
So naturally, he lost the general election, and his request for a do-over was crushed by the courts two days later.
…George Simion, who was defeated in Sunday’s runoff by the liberal mayor of Bucharest, Nicuşor Dan, said on Tuesday he would ask the constitutional court to void the ballot “for the same reasons they annulled the elections” last year.
The election, which Dan won by a margin of 53.6% to 46.4%, was the second time the vote had been held. The first, last November, was cancelled by the court after the first round amid allegations of campaign financing violations and a “massive” Russian interference campaign.
In Brussels, there was much rejoicing.
New President (not Lieutenant) Dan appointed a new Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan, and the not-quite-as-clean-as-a-whistle new Romanian government was off to the races. But what really mattered was that they were in good standing with Brussels.
…The new President brokered the formation of a new governing coalition bringing together the pro-EU parties, PSD, PNL, USR and UDMR, approved by parliament on 23 June 2025. Under the coalition agreement, Ilie Bolojan of PNL will serve as Prime Minister for two years with the position then rotating to the PSD in 2027.
The honeymoon is over.
Simion’s party, the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), is leading in early polls for the next elections, and it just pulled a power play with the liberal Social Democrats to win a no-confidence vote against Prime Minister Bolojan. At issue were mandated cuts to close one of the widest fiscal budget gaps in Europe, and the deadline to do so to access EU funding afterward.
Romania’s government collapsed after losing a no-confidence vote, triggering challenging talks over a new cabinet that’s needed to safeguard efforts to rein in the European Union’s widest budget deficit.
The Social Democrats, the largest party in the country’s parliament which initiated the motion against Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan’s minority cabinet, urged President Nicusor Dan to convene talks quickly with political parties and for the premier to resign as interim leader.
It’s really quite a pairing of opposites working in tandem to destroy yet another artificial cordon santitaire set up by centrist parties to marginalize the populist right-wing parties voters seem to be gravitating towards.

And is it any wonder? What Romanians have seen happening since the annulled election has sincerely alarmed them. They want their democracy back.

This collapse also sets up an almost unthinkable scenario based on events a year ago, and quite a case of schadenfreude if they pull it off.
…The result? After nearly a year of “pro-European” governance, Romania is now facing the highest inflation, the largest budget deficit, the largest trade and current account deficits, and the highest interest expenses in the entire European Union. This context has led Romanian society to trigger a full-blown social crisis, amid an unbearable decline in living standards and due to the extreme austerity imposed by the Bolojan government.
Political reactions have been varied, but they have confirmed a single reality: AUR is the most important political party in Romania. The social democrats withdrew from the governing coalition and joined the initiative announced by AUR to file a motion of no confidence against the Bolojan government.
…According to AUR leaders, their goal is to oust the current government and trigger snap elections, so that Romania can return to the democratic framework that existed prior to the annulment of the 2024 presidential election, and so that Romanians can be proportionally represented in parliament. The latest opinion polls place the party led by George Simion at the top of Romanians’ preferences, with a percentage between 35 per cent and 40 per cent, more than double that of the second-place party, the social democrats (PSD).
The political crisis in Romania is, right now, the clearest indication that the era of a progressive Europe, led by bureaucrats in Brussels, is drawing to a close. The so-called pro-European government has led to a severe crisis of direction, not just a political conflict, and the rift between the state and its citizens is becoming increasingly noticeable. Romania is currently facing a drastic ideology shift, and a sovereignist government could transform this country into the most important bastion of conservatism in Southeast Europe.
I wonder if Brussels hears the bells tolling.
