Metropolitan Police on Wednesday said they found a 2-year-old boy who was declared missing the night before after his mother was shot and killed in Northwest D.C.

Police said the toddler, Royce Hawkins, was found unharmed, hours after his mother’s slaying in an alley near the 600 block of Kenyon Street Northwest.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert for Royce because he was last seen at about 7 p.m. Tuesday. The alert was canceled after the boy was located Wednesday morning.

Royce’s mother, whose identity wasn’t shared by officials, was fatally shot after an argument with a man at about 11 p.m. Tuesday.

The suspect fled the scene, and police have not released a description of the assailant.
