Justice Samuel Alito hospitalized last month after falling ill

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito was treated for dehydration after becoming ill at an event in Philadelphia on March 20, though it was not made public at the time.

Mr. Alito was at a Federalist Society dinner in Philadelphia and was taken to a hospital after becoming ill.

“Out of an abundance of caution, he agreed with his security detail’s recommendation to see a physician before the three-hour drive home,” Supreme Court Public Information Officer Patricia McCabe said in a statement Friday. “After that examination and the administration of fluids for dehydration, he returned home that night, as previously planned.”

He returned to work on the following Monday.

Mr. Alito was the honored guest that evening at a formal dinner, dedicated to his two decades on the nation’s highest court.

The daylong conference at the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, titled “An Examination of the Jurisprudence of Justice Alito.” The program featured Mr. Alito’s former law clerks, colleagues and law professors.

He did not attend the symposium.

Supreme Court justices are not required to publicly disclose their health. Some have been more open than others.

The second-oldest justice, at 76, Mr. Alito has been the subject of speculation about whether he will retire, allowing President Trump to pick his replacement.

Mr. Alito has been a consistent conservative voice on the bench.

During Wednesday’s oral arguments, when the justices examined the legality of Mr. Trump’s order to limit birthright citizenship, he was active in discussions, appearing open to limiting the constitutional guarantee.
