President Trump said Wednesday that Iran’s president has requested a ceasefire, and said the U.S. will consider the proposal only after Tehran allows shipping in the Strait of Hormuz to “free and clear.”
“Iran’s New Regime President, much less Radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for a CEASEFIRE! We will consider when Hormuz Strait is open, free, and clear,” Mr. Trump said on Truth Social. “Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion or, as they say, back to the Stone Ages!!!”
Mr. Trump did not specifically identify who he was referring to as the “new regime president,” but according to reports, Iran’s president remains Masoud Pezeshkian, who was already in office before the recent conflict began on Feb. 28.
He was not replaced — the leadership change only affected the Supreme Leader position following Ali Khamenei’s assassination.
Mr. Trump will deliver a prime-time address to the nation at 9 p.m. Wednesday on the Iran war. It is not clear whether Mr. Trump will announce any changes to joint U.S.-Israeli operation, which entered its second month earlier this week.
On Tuesday, Mr. Trump said the U.S. could end the Iran conflict in two-to-three weeks, adding that it could be sooner if Iran pushes to make a deal.
“We’re finishing the job, and I think within maybe two weeks, maybe a couple of days longer to do the job, but we want to knock out every single thing there,” Mr. Trump told White House reporters.
