Well, dang!
It certainly looks like those separation-minded folks in Alberta, Canada, weren’t kidding when they said they were way ahead of schedule in gathering the required number of valid signatures to force a referendum on the province’s independence.
JeffS sent me a heads-up the day before yesterday that there was general jubilation in the movement ranks because they’d dingdingdinged themselves to the number, but I didn’t want to post anything until it had been confirmed.
🚨BREAKING: The 177,000 signature threshold has now been passed, officially clearing the requirement for an Alberta independence referendum on October 19th.

Mitch Sylvestre has been the driving force behind the movement and gathering the signatures during the petition drive.Â

A signature drive that will continue until the official cut-off date on 2 May. Organizers want to gather as many as they possibly can in order to offset any challenges. They know there are going to be plenty of those from indigenous First Nations groups and Canadians who are just pissed at what the group is doing.Â
Some suits challenging the movement’s legitimacy have already been filed.
Legal proceedings have been initiated to block a petition for Alberta’s separation from Canada over allegations of treaty violations.
Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation has launched legal action against the Alberta government and its chief electoral officer, Gordon McClure, in an attempt to block a petition in favour of the separation of the province of Alberta from Canada.
Treaty 8
In a statement issued last week (2 January) by its chief Sheldon Sunshine, the First Nation confirmed that it had filed a statement of claim with the Alberta Court of King’s Bench against Alberta and McClure for failures to “diligently implement” Treaty 8 and for violations of the treaty. Treaty 8 was signed by First Nations and the Crown for “reasons of peace and friendship” in June 1899, prior to the establishment of the province of Alberta, and encompasses 840,000 square kilometres of land. Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation also announced its intention to file an urgent injunction to block the petition on 6 January.
One of the most prominent voices in the separatist movement announced the number and immediately issued a challenge to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith. She’s taken a more conciliatory path towards Alberta’s place in the Canadian federation, often speaking soothingly of a ‘sovereign Alberta within a united Canada.’
Now that the movement has easily gained enough signatures and the momentum shows no sign of slowing down, Jeffrey Rath, counsel for the Alberta Prosperity Project, took a swipe at Smith.
A leading figure in the Alberta separatist movement claims the group has met the signature threshold to potentially trigger a referendum and is challenging Premier Danielle Smith to support the push for independence.

Jeffrey Rath, the lawyer for the Alberta Prosperity Project, told Postmedia in an interview Tuesday that separatist canvassers had gathered more than the required 177,732 signatures and expect to far surpass that number before the May 2 deadline.
…Rath called on Smith to abandon her frequent use of the phrase “a sovereign Alberta within a united Canada,” calling it “silly.”

“It’s going to force Danielle and the United Conservative Party (UCP) government to consider whether they want to keep parroting that,” he said.

“Just full on embrace the fact that Alberta is going to become a free and independent country.”
Market predictor Polymarket is showing a huge jump in the likelihood of a secession referendum. The tentative date for that vote, if it happens, would be October 19th.

Some folks have noted that the date coincides with the Yorktown surrender ceremony in 1781. I’ll just leave that there for now.
In any event, it’s far from a done deal, even if all the signatures pan out and the vote is locked on. Right now, there are equally ardent ‘remain’ voices doing their best to fend off the separatist fever raging through the province, and they do have the upper hand in opinion polls and contrary signature-gathering efforts at the moment.
…Also Tuesday, former deputy premier Thomas Lukaszuk published an open letter to the UCP chairman of the committee reviewing his Forever Canadian petition, which gathered more than 456,000 signatures in support of Alberta remaining in Canada under prior legislation over a 90-day period that ended in October.
The secret weapon the separatists have on their side is the wimpish Prime Minister of Canada, tiny woke World Economic Forum globalist-banker-turned-politician, Mark Carney.
How so, you ask? Isn’t he just a worse version of Fidelito Trudeau?
Oh, you betcha.
And at the moment, Carney’s doing everything humanly possible to drive people out of Canada. The Alberta Independence Movement couldn’t have a better friend.
After a decade of Trudeau I didn’t think the Canadian Economy could get worse
I was wrong

Carney’s latest announcement had Canadians – who thrive on outdoor living, fishing, hunting, hiking, etc. – gasping. The confirmed climate cultist is pledging over three billion Canadian dollars to lock up 30% of Canadian land by 2030, in national parks, preserves, and a few areas that ‘allow’ for some other uses.
As in ‘locked down’ – Canadians won’t be allowed to use their land.
PROTECTING NATURE
To understand net zero, you must understand the Liberals.
To understand the Liberals, you must understand Carney.
To understand Carney, you must understand Charles III.
It is as simple as that.
What’s complicated, is to know how to get the King out of our lives for good. https://t.co/9mzlGr5IYm pic.twitter.com/6Z32ZbYjxo

The ‘Brookfield’ this and many other alarmed Xweets refer to is the massive Canadian asset management company of which one ‘Mark Carney’ was their ‘Vice Chair and Head of ESG and Impact Fund Investing’ until he swung this prime minister gig.
It’s hard to get more aggressive virtue-signaling, social-justice-warrior street cred than being the head of a multinational’s ESG fund, especially coming straight from his previous job as the UN’s Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance.
Brookfield Asset Management (NYSE: BAM) (TSX: BAM.A) today announced the appointment of Mark Carney as a Vice Chair and Head of ESG and Impact Fund Investing. Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his role at Brookfield. He is currently the United Nations Special Envoy for Climate Action and Finance and is a longtime advocate for sustainability, specifically with regard to the management and reduction of climate risks.
Mark will expand on Brookfield’s existing strengths in ESG investing with the development of a group of funds that will work to combine positive social and environmental outcomes with strong risk-adjusted returns for investors. The funds will make ESG-focused investments that are both capable of delivering measurable outcomes against specific impact goals and consistent with Brookfield’s extensive experience investing in high-quality, sustainable assets that form the backbone of the global economy.
And now he runs the country.
Anyone worried yet? They should be.
Well…somebody gets it.
So, nearly ONE THIRD of Canada will be locked under governmental control…
Which would include all NATURAL RESOURCES on that land.
This is not about protecting nature.

As the spring moves into summer, there may be more Albertans who start to get a sour taste in their ‘remain’ mouths, too…Â
Easter is almost here – and Canada’s Liberal government has chosen this sacred season to display its utter contempt for Christianity. It is currently forcing through the outrageous Bill C-9, which could make it a hate crime to quote from sections of the Bible.
More than 40 civil and religious groups had asked that for the Bill’s language be clarified and its scope more carefully defined so that religious texts would not be subject to hate crime legislation. But all in vain. After a hot debate in the House of Commons, the Liberals highhandedly ended a Conservative filibuster and fast-tracked the bill. It has now been sent to the Senate to decide if Canada is the kind of country that wants to turn quoting St. Paul into a criminal act.
…Intimidation, according to the bill, means “engaging in any conduct” – any conduct, not necessarily threatening conduct – “with the intent to provoke a state of fear in a person in order to impede their access to a building or structure.” Canadian police will have to get very good at mind-reading. How else will they know if an idler on the pavement is simply gazing into space, or staring at someone “with intent” to cause fear?
…But the most controversial part of all is the removal of the hate-crime exemption for good-faith interpretation of a religious text, which was previously enshrined in the criminal code to prevent religious persecution and harassment.
…thanks to an increasingly dystopian Liberal government’s overreach.
Today, licensed gun owners across Canada received emails warning them to surrender legally owned firearms or face criminal prosecution.
Let that sink in.

Law-abiding Canadians — people who followed every rule — are now being told to hand over billions of dollars of personal property because Ottawa changed its mind.
No vote.
No real consultation.
And compensation that many see as either uncertain or insulting even if it comes.
This is exactly why Alberta is having a serious independence conversation.
On October 19, Albertans could vote to take back control of our own laws, our own property rights, and our own future. By October 20, Alberta could begin charting a path where decisions affecting Albertans are actually made in Alberta.
The gun grab confiscation isn’t just about firearms.
It’s about power.
It’s about whether a distant federal government can keep imposing policies rejected by the people who live and work here.
And while many Canadians are going along quietly, more Albertans are starting to say: enough.
Independence is no longer a fringe idea — it’s the only realistic option left to protect our rights and our economy.
MORE ALBERTANS ARE STARTING TO SAY: ENOUGH
And every single day, Ottawa and Carney convince even more of them to sign on the dotted line.
They might just be able to get this done.
I can’t wait to see the final figures on May 2.
