The House Intelligence Committee voted Tuesday to hand over classified documents to federal prosecutors as part of the investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan — a move that suggests the Justice Department may be getting closer to charges.
The vote took place behind closed doors after the Justice Department requested the records, according to Punchbowl News. None of the documents will be made public for now.
Prosecutors have been digging for months into allegations that Mr. Brennan misled Congress about an intelligence assessment on Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.
CNN reported that one of the records the committee will turn over is a transcript of an interview with Mr. Brennan, who has denied any wrongdoing.
In a related development, former FBI Director James Comey was subpoenaed last week by federal prosecutors in Miami.
It’s part of a broader Justice Department investigation into former officials who investigated and prosecuted President Donald Trump.
According to Axios, the probe has issued more than 130 subpoenas since it ramped up last year and is focused on senior officials who served under former Presidents Barack Obama and Joseph R. Biden.
Those officials — including Mr. Comey — have criticized the investigation.
