19-year-old sped at 132 mph in Connecticut, later told police he was late for job interview

Connecticut State Police said they measured a Mercedes traveling at 132 mph. The 19-year-old driver later told troopers over the phone that he was late for a job interview.

Just before 9 a.m. Wednesday, a CSP trooper saw a Mercedes E300 speeding on U.S. Interstate I-91 going southbound near Cromwell, Connecticut. A speed laser unit measured the car going 132 mph, CSP said in a release.

The trooper went to make a traffic stop, and the driver proceeded to flee, weaving in and out of traffic at high speed, the police said. The trooper stopped the pursuit, and authorities contacted the registered owner of the Mercedes, who told them it was being driven by their family member, Azmir Djurkovic, 19.

CSP then called Mr. Djurkovic, who admitted that he was behind the wheel and who told police that he sped away because he was late for a job interview. He then agreed to come to a CSP post in Hartford, Connecticut.

Mr. Djurkovic is charged with reckless driving, first-degree reckless endangerment, failing to stay in a lane, passing on the right, passing at an unsafe distance, improper turning, disobeying an officer’s signal, interfering with an officer, and engaging police in a pursuit.

He got out of custody on a $2,500 bond and is due back in court on June 17, CSP said.
