Jessica McClure Morales, known as “Baby Jessica” during her 1987 rescue from a Texas well, has been arrested on an assault charge at her home in Midland County, Texas, multiple news outlets report.
Ms. Morales, 40, was taken into custody following a domestic disturbance and charged with assault causing bodily injury involving family violence.
She was released from the Midland County Detention Center after posting bond. Details about what led to the charge have not been released.
Ms. Morales is known for, at 18 months old, falling down a small well in her aunt’s backyard in Midland while playing with four other toddlers.
Hundreds of paramedics, rescuers, drilling experts and contractors worked around the clock for 58 hours before pulling her free.
The rescue was broadcast live across the country and was adapted into a 1989 television movie.
After her rescue, she faced 15 surgeries and gangrene. Her right foot is also noticeably smaller than her left, and she bears a faint scar on her forehead.
Following the incident, a trust fund was set up for Ms. Morales, but most of it was lost after the 2008 stock market crash. The rest was saved to buy a house for her family.
Ms. Morales settled with her husband and children in rural Texas, and is now a grandparent.
She works at Richards Horticulture in Midland.
