President Trump announced on social media Wednesday that the eight Iranian women scheduled to be executed by the regime now won’t be.
“Very good news! I have just been informed that the eight women protestors who were going to be executed tonight in Iran will no longer be killed. Four will be released immediately, and four will be sentenced to one month in prison,” he said.
“I very much appreciate that Iran, and its leaders, respected my request, as President of the United States, and terminated the planned execution.”
Mr. Trump’s announcement came not long after he extended the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran and posted on Tuesday that as the U.S. team goes to negotiate with Iranian officials, he would “greatly appreciate the release of these women.”
“To the Iranian leaders, who will soon be in negotiations with my representatives: I would greatly appreciate the release of these women. I am sure that they will respect the fact that you did so,” Mr. Trump said.
“Please do them no harm! Would be a great start to our negotiations!!!”
The Islamic regime accused the women of throwing projectiles during a January protest against the government and providing assistance to protesters injured during the massive uprising, according to international humanitarian rights organizations.
Protests erupted on Dec. 28, 2025, initially over Iran’s collapsing economy, and quickly spread nationwide before being met with a massive crackdown in early January.
While Iran’s government put the death toll of protesters killed by the regime at 3,117, saying 2,427 were civilians and security forces, and labeled the rest “terrorists,” human rights groups said Iran often undercounts fatalities.
As of late January, the total death toll estimates ranged from about 6,488 to more than 36,500, making this among the largest massacres in Iran’s modern history.
Among those who were already executed by the regime are a 19-year-old wrestling star and a nurse who aided protesters.
