A man was fatally shot Sunday afternoon after attempting to carjack a vehicle occupied by a family in Garland, Texas, police said. No charges have been filed against the driver who fired.
Officers were called to the scene around 3:30 p.m. after a green car collided with two other vehicles, according to NBC DFW. Police said the driver of that car then attempted to take several vehicles by force at a nearby gas station before crossing the street to a convenience store parking lot, where he approached a white Chevrolet Impala carrying a family that included children.
A physical altercation ensued between the suspect and the Impala’s driver. Surveillance video from a nearby business captured the struggle, during which the father drew a firearm and shot the suspect. The man was transported to a hospital, where he later died, CBS News Texas reported. No other injuries were reported.
“It seemed to be self-defense,” Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau told Fox 4. “It kind of all happened like really fast.”
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. No charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing. The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, the Garland Police Department said.
