Kuwait says international airport damaged by Iranian drone and missile attacks

Kuwait suspended flight operations Wednesday at Kuwait International Airport following what it called Iranian missile and drone attacks targeting Terminal 1 that inflicted substantial damage.

Kuwait’s Health Ministry said the attacks killed at least one civilian and wounded 63 others. The attacks also damaged airport facilities and “diplomatic missions,” according to Kuwaiti authorities.

Dozens of flights were canceled as a result of the attacks, according to flight tracker Flightradar24, with some flights diverted to alternative routes.

Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack as reckless and said it reserved the right to respond.

“The Ministry stresses that the security of the State of Kuwait, its sovereignty, and the safety of its citizens and residents on its territory are a red line that cannot be crossed, affirming that the repetition of these aggressions represents an organized aggressive approach, which the State of Kuwait will neither accept nor tolerate,” the ministry wrote in a statement.

Other Persian Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, condemned the attacks on Kuwait, asserting they hurt regional stability.

Iran has not claimed responsibility for the attack, and there was no immediate statement from Tehran.

Wednesday’s attacks come after Iran targeted a Kuwaiti air base late last month and U.S. military installations in the country this week. The former strikes are said to have severely damaged two MQ-9 Reaper strike drones stationed in the country.

Since the U.S.-Iran war began in late February, Iran has launched missile and drone strikes at Gulf states for their hosting of American military bases. Kuwait hosts several U.S. military installations, including Camp Arifjan, a major logistics hub for the U.S. Army.
