My deep-seated loathing of the United States Department of Education and all that it has wrought is well known to people who have been reading my stuff for a long time. I’ve been writing about school choice for a couple of decades now. On the most recent episode of “Faith All Over the Place,” I told my friends Chris Queen and Ashley McCully something to the effect of, “I can blame most of the societal ills that plague America on federal involvement in public education.” (Side note: for the precise quote, please listen to the podcast! It’s always all-access.)
As we are all painfully aware, the Dept. of Education has zero interest in educating American children. It is a federal bureaucratic grift carried out on a monumental scale. At present, the grift cost taxpayers somewhere in the neighborhood of $80 billion a year. The budget is quite complicated, indicating that the money will be spent in various ways. The truth, however, is that the money is all going towards one thing: indoctrinating American school children and turning them into lifelong leftists, and hopefully reliable votes for Democrats. We like to blame Academia for polluting the minds of young people, but the reality is that most of the damage is done during the K-12 years. College is just commie finishing school for students who spent their K-12 years in the DOE indoctrination mills.
In a VIP column I wrote earlier in the week, I worried about the future of the Republic if the Democrats ever get control of the White House and both chambers of Congress again. Barring a civil war, it will be lights out for the United States as we know it. The Trump Derangement Syndrome Dems have been very open about their desire to pack the Supreme Court with radical progressives and making Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. states. This will guarantee one-party Dem rule until they flush the country all the way down the toilet and we go the vestigial way of the once-great countries in Europe.
If the Democrats do gain control of the presidency and Congress anytime soon, their majorities on Capitol Hill may not be big enough to get everything that they want right away. They are relentless in their pursuit of their communist ideals, so they’ll keep at it. Democrats have always been good at long game political patience. They’ve faltered a bit during the Trump era, but they’ve still got skills.
Should the Dept. of Education be allowed to continue operating unchecked, it is a foregone conclusion that it will happen. The drag queen story hour tales read to the kiddies will all be about racist Republican domestic terrorists who hide under bridges and deport puppies to Guatemala. The “Balkanize or Bust” moment will eventually be reached.
When President Trump tapped Linda McMahon to head up the DOE in his second term, I had high hopes that she would work hard to make her job go away. Compared to any of her predecessors, McMahon is an excellent Education secretary. She is working hard to fix a lot of the problems in our public schools, including the lack of patriotism, which Catherine recently wrote about. She’s effective, but I was hoping that she would be less delicate.

Whenever Democrats talk about Republicans who want to abolish the DOE, they immediately leap to the insanely false premise that we don’t want to fund public education at all. That is obviously rooted in the fact that they’re top-down, centralized government fetishists. They simply can’t fathom anything functioning without federal funding, which they also believe is “free” money.
One big casualty of modern public education is the proper teaching of history. Younger leftists don’t know that the Dept. of Education has only been a stand-alone, cabinet-level agency for 46 years. We accomplished quite a bit as a country before Washington was “helping” so much with local schools.
There are dozens of ways to come at the DOE and justify its abolishment or diminishment. Absent wholesale changes, a two-prong approach of promoting school choice and reducing the involvement of the DOE would be a good place to start. School choice weakens the evil teachers’ unions. The unions are powerful political lobbies that are integral to the Democrats’ one-party rule plans. They also keep the teachers pumping out leftist nonsense. Anything that can be done to kneecap them is good for America.
The more layers of bureaucracy between the source of the funding and its recipient, the greater likelihood that the money will never be spent as it should. The amount of money being spent directly on students has been shrinking almost every year that the Dept. of Education has been expanding and getting bigger budgets. It’s a story as old as the first bureaucracy: they misspend the money, then tell voters that the only solution is to give them more money. When it comes to education, if you’re not on board with every budgetary increase they demand, they say that you don’t care about the children.
We do care about the children, which is why we don’t want them to be brainless radical automatons who are dooming themselves to a future in a massive continental gulag disguised as the United States of America.
When he’s done with Iran, maybe President Trump can go to war with the Department of Education.
