Washingtonians should expect an increased presence in law enforcement this summer ahead of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, Assistant Attorney General Colin McDonald said during a Friday news conference.
President Trump’s D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force, implemented in March 2025, is a federal and local law enforcement partnership that includes National Guard deployments to target public safety in the capital.
Mr. McDonald said the task force will have more federal resources this summer in a “proactive and deliberate measure to ensure this great city remains safe and beautiful.”
U.S. Marshals Service Director Gadyaces Serralta announced the increase of high-visibility patrols across the nation’s capital.
“You will see the difference all summer long in D.C.,” he said. “No crime will be tolerated, especially violent crime.”
He said law enforcement will use every tool available: drones, helicopters and tactical canines.
U.S. Park Police will boost officers in Washington to patrol the monuments, he said, whether that be on foot, in vehicles or on horseback. The National Guard also plans to expand their presence, Mr. Serralta said.
Events, exhibits and historical commemorations are taking over the National Mall and surrounding streets, marking one of the largest civic celebrations in the city’s history.
Included this summer will be the Great American State Fair, the Freedom 250 Grand Prix and the July 4 Spirit of Independence Festival.
U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro said that aside from increased law enforcement visibility and expanded coordinated operations ahead of America 250, she plans to charge the parents of teens who violate the D.C. youth curfew.
Teen takeovers — coordinated gatherings that often turn into street brawls and police altercations in places like the Navy Yard — have caused District leaders to clamp down on teen curfews.
