U.S. Imposes 50% Tariffs on Some Canadian Goods Over ‘Discriminatory’ Actions – PJ Media

Mark Carney and the Syrupeans are bleating again.

After spending the better part of the past twelve months jet-setting around the world, trying to drum up support for his New World Order, and, while out of the Northern Hemisphere, making sure to tell everyone just how bad the United States sucks, while sucking up to Donald Trump the second he comes home empty-handed, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is now in the F.O. part of his F.A. tour.





From the moment Trump started his tariff and trade deficit reset program, every country on the list, with the exception of two, came to the table to readjust its own tariffs and work with the U.S.. Two countries retaliated with more restrictions and tariffs of their own than they already had in place: China and Canada.

You might remember when Canadian provinces made a big show of pulling US liquor and wine off their shelves. Dairy – already under pretty onerous import restrictions by the Canadians – became even worse with what Carney added on top. The time came for the Trump administration to finally say, ‘enough.’

Dairy has been discriminatory against American producers for even longer — and Carney’s government gave Europeans a better deal than the U.S.

Provinces slapped hard caps/quotas on U.S. cars and total bans or restrictions on American alcohol and liquor.

The U.S. tried for over a year to get Canada to drop this crap. They gave us the best treatment available in the world.

But under Carney’s office, it kept escalating.

Now Trump responds with tariffs — and Greer says flat out: “For us, this is business. This is trade. This is economics. We’re looking at bottom lines.”

Exactly. Not personal. Just consequences.

Carney’s team picked the fight, dragged it out for a full year, refused to fix the discriminatory policies, and now Canadian farmers, auto workers, exporters and consumers get hit.

This is the “master negotiator” in action.

Canada deserves leaders who actually protect our interests instead of poking the bear and then acting surprised when it swipes back.





And it’s laid out in the White House fact sheet.

  • Canada imposes certain tariffs and quotas on cars imported to Canada from the U.S., but not on imports from other countries.  Canada also administers these quotas in a way that compels U.S. auto companies to invest in production in Canada instead of the United States.
    • From April 2025 through March 2026, Canadian imports of U.S. motor vehicles decreased by approximately 22%, or $5.6 billion, compared to the same period in 2024-2025. Exports of motor vehicles from other countries to Canada have increased to meet the demand previously filled by U.S. exports.  
  • All but two Canadian provinces and territories have halted the purchase, distribution, or retailing of U.S. alcoholic beverages, and have not imposed similar restrictions on other countries.
    • From March 2025 through February 2026, Canadian imports of U.S. alcoholic beverages decreased by about 81%, or $582 million, compared to the same period in 2024-2025.
  • As part of its complicated and protectionist dairy system, Canada established tariff-rate quotas on U.S. cheese that are much more restrictive than the tariff-rate quotas imposed on similar imports of cheese into Canada from the EU, despite Canada having trade agreements with both the U.S. and the EU.

If we take a look at the alcohol sales, it gets really interesting as far as the elbows-up crowd shooting themselves in the foot. 

Here is the revolting uber-woke premier of British Columbia, David Eby, bragging about never allowing a drop of US wine or liquor back on BC provincial shelves.





Way to go, David! That’ll show us.

But there’s another interesting catch to the anal-retentive way Canadian provincial governments go about making their citizens’ lives as difficult as possible. It turns out they cannot sell CANADIAN alcohol between provinces. It took the threat of a 50 percent US tariff to finally get them talking about allowing the unthinkable across provincial borders.

WHY DOES OUR POLITICAL CLASS HATE TRUMP MORE THAN THEY LOVE CANADA?

Syrupeans are very strange. 





…They rallied behind Carney with stirring declarations of “Team Canada” unity and “new urgency.”  Ford demanded everyone be “more vocal” against Trump (because yelling louder has historically worked so well).  Everyone nodded in agreement about health transfers, major projects, and affordability.

The crowning achievement? Nine provinces signed an agreement to let us buy out-of-province booze directly.  Amazing  After decades of interprovincial trade barriers strangling the economy, they finally cracked the booze cabinet. Quebec sat it out, of course, because why spoil a good protection racket?

No plan to deal with Trump’s wake-up call.  Just vague promises to “intensify negotiations” while the clock ticks toward August 19. Another photo-op summit where Canada’s leaders proved they’re excellent at projecting confidence and terrible at actual delivery.

Canadians facing higher prices and economic pain can rest easy knowing their premiers had a constructive chat and some Island lobster. Problem solved.

Remember just the other day when DIS GUY was demanding help with the wildfires in his province because that’s what ‘good neighbors do‘ for each other?

Yeah. 

Good times, good times.

Doesn’t take foaming Ford long to revert to form.

One honest broker says that, even with the 50 percent tariff added, it is still going to be cheaper to sell his Canadian wine in the United States than in his own country.





WHUT

Canada, YOU have a problem.

Some people think Trump is the inadvertent solution.

CANADA HAS NO REAL MEANING WITHOUT AMERICA

The White House is saying that these tariffs are a clapback for the Canadian retaliation that’s been ongoing since last year, and has nothing to do with President Trump’s threat to impose more tariffs because of the wildfire smoke and Canada’s mismanagement of a known threat. It is predominantly, in analysts’ view, centered on the punitive Canadian dairy block.

ALTHOUGH one interesting tidbit to come out of the pretty entertaining Canadian video below was a factoid about the wildland fires that sort of hearkens back to a Gavin Newsom move. Yes, the Canadians have unbelievable tracts of forest wilderness, like the ninth largest on earth. And, yes, it is physically impossible to stomp out fires in the remote regions of dense boreal growth. 

But when you know you are going through a dry spell and will have fewer but larger fires that can be effectively fought if you have the manpower?

You don’t lay off half of your fire management team, which is what Mark Carney did.





Carney government cut nearly half the jobs at nerve centre for managing wildfires: union

Before discussing wildfire smoke with U.S. President Donald Trump at the World Cup final on Sunday, July 19, Prime Minister Mark Carney posted photos on social media from a visit to the federal Government Operations Centre (GOC).

“This morning, I met with federal workers in Ottawa who are supporting the wildfire response efforts in Northwestern Ontario and across the country,” the post read.

With Trump threatening new tariffs on Canada over smoke that blanketed much of the northeastern United States last week, Carney highlighted the government’s efforts to co-ordinate the response to “one of the most intense wildfire seasons in Canadian history.”

But, under the Carney government’s plan to reduce the size of the public service, the centre featured in the post had lost about 50 positions, or nearly half its workforce, according to Canada’s largest public sector union.

“The government operations centre (GOC) is responsible for coordinating our national emergency response,” Sharon DeSousa, national president of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), said in a written statement.

“Gutting it by almost half puts people across the country at risk, including frontline workers who are battling wildfires, supporting evacuations and risking their lives.”

Canadians aren’t going to let Carney forget it any time soon…





…even when he comes to the table over the tariffs.
