Window washers rescued from dangling basket 15 stories up at Tysons

Fairfax County firefighters rescued two window washers who were stuck in a basket about 15 stories up at Tysons Tower in Virginia. No one was injured.

The basket malfunctioned at around 9:17 a.m. Thursday, fire officials said, at the high-rise in the 7900 block of Tysons One Place.

The scaffolding suffered a mechanical failure, leaving two workers, neither named publicly by fire officials, stranded in the slanted basket high up at the 22-floor building that’s the tallest in Tysons Corner.

The fire department secured ropes to steel beams at the top of the building, and a rescuer was lowered to retrieve the first window washer. Once the worker was secured, the rope was lowered from the basket to a waiting fire department ladder bucket below.

After that, the process was repeated, and the second window washer was also rescued without injury.

Fire officials did not specify what caused the window washing basket to fail in the first place.
