The Secret Service early Monday arrested a man accused of breaking multiple windows at Vice President J.D. Vance’s home in Ohio, authorities said, the latest instance of political violence.
The Secret Service took William DeFoor, 26, into custody on felony vandalism and misdemeanor trespassing and criminal endangerment charges after he broke four windows at Mr. Vance’s Cincinnati residence, the agency said. The suspect also damaged a federal vehicle parked near the house.
The agency said Mr. Vance was not home during the attack that happened just after midnight Sunday. The vice president and his family had left Ohio on Sunday afternoon after spending a week in his home state.
Court records obtained by KXIX-TV show that DeFoor has a prior vandalism conviction from April after he caused $2,000 worth of damage at a Cincinnati business.
The suspect was given a two-year sentence at a mental health institution. It’s unclear if he is allowed off the institution’s property or how he arrived at Mr. Vance’s home.
DeFoor will make his first court appearance Tuesday.
Politically charged violence erupted throughout much of last year.
That includes the arson attack on the home of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro and the fatal shooting of two Israeli Embassy staffers in the District. An illegal immigrant from Egypt was also linked to firebombing a pro-Israel demonstration in Boulder, Colorado.
A gunman killed one Minnesota state lawmaker and wounded another in targeted shootings at their homes last summer. Authorities have struggled to find a clear motive for the man who dressed up as a police officer and opened fire on the two politicians.
And conservative activist Charlie Kirk was assassinated in September after a sniper shot him during an outdoor speaking event at Utah Valley University.
