Victoria Spartz, Indiana Republican, changes her mind and will run for reelection in House

Rep. Victoria Spartz of Indiana said Monday she plans to seek another term in the House, saying “challenging times for our Republic” made her reconsider an earlier decision to forgo a 2024 campaign.

Ms. Spartz, a Ukraine-born Republican in the 5th Congressional District, initially balked at a reelection fight because she needed time to recharge and spend time with family in Indiana.

“As someone who grew up under tyranny, I understand the significance of these challenging times for our Republic, and if my fellow Hoosiers and God decide, I will be honored to continue fighting for them,” she said. “We must carry on the sacrifice of countless Americans for our liberties and keep the American dream alive for our children.”

Ms. Spartz had hinted for months she was reconsidering her decision and said she was “urged on” by constituents.

The blunt lawmaker has been critical of all sides in Washington.

In her statement on Monday, she bemoaned “the current failed leadership in Washington, D.C., on the important issues for our nation that I have worked very hard on.”

And while she supports her native Ukraine in its fight against Russia, she has demanded greater oversight of where U.S. aid dollars are going.

Ms. Spartz represents a district in central Indiana that former President Donald Trump won in the 2020 election.
