Trump on Virginia attorney Erik Siebert: ‘I fired him!’

President Trump pushed back on reports that Erik Siebert, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, resigned, saying definitively that he fired him.

“Today I withdrew the Nomination of Erik Siebert as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, when I was informed that he received the UNUSUALLY STRONG support of the two absolutely terrible, sleazebag Democrat Senators, from the Great State of Virginia,” Mr. Trump wrote in a Truth Social post late Friday. “He didn’t quit, I fired him!”

“Next time let him go in as a Democrat, not a Republican,” he said.

Reports Friday said Mr. Siebert resigned after the monthslong mortgage fraud investigation into New York Attorney General Letitia James resulted in no incriminating evidence.

He confirmed he was leaving in an email to his colleagues that was reviewed by The Associated Press.

Mr. Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Friday that he wanted Mr. Siebert gone.

“Yeah, I want him out, yeah. When I learned that he was blue-slipped through by two Democratic senators in Virginia — people that would never vote for — the people that haven’t voted for [Republicans] for probably years,” Mr. Trump said.

Mr. Siebert has support from Democratic Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, both of Virginia.

Ms. James filed a lawsuit against Mr. Trump and his company in New York last year. He was found guilty and ordered to pay $500 million, but the penalty was thrown out last month.

“It looks to me like she’s very guilty of something, but I really don’t know,” Mr. Trump said of Ms. James on Friday.
