A New York City subway rider died Monday after possibly being pushed onto the tracks in a station in East Harlem. An oncoming train was unable to stop and ran over the unidentified person.
The unidentified victim was struck at 6:48 p.m. at the 125th Street and Lexington Avenue station, a New York City Police Department spokesperson told Bloomberg.
Carlton McPherson, 24, was charged with murder for pushing the victim, police told The Associated Press.
Police said the attack was unprovoked. Mr. McPherson is also facing a separate court case for assault, for which he is due back in court in July, according to the New York Post.
Hours earlier Monday at a separate 125th Street subway station, NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper announced new measures against fare evasion at a news conference, saying, “The tone of law and order starts at the turnstiles.”
The steps include the deployment of at least 800 more police officers across the city’s subway system.
Monday’s incident also comes three weeks after New York Gov. Kathy Hochul dispatched 750 National Guardsmen to the subways to perform random bag checks in the hopes of keeping weapons off trains.
