Threads letting popular users make money

Meta’s Threads has launched a creator monetization program for users with big followings.

The plan lets the popular users make money on the social media platform, nicknamed the Twitter Killer. The program is invite-only and has a few key caveats.

The app’s owner, Meta, says invited creators must follow certain guidelines to remain in the program. Posts eligible for the bonus must have over 2,500 views, cannot include brand partnerships, cannot include watermarks from other social media platforms and cannot include copyrighted material.

The program has been in testing since early March and is available for only U.S. users, but Meta plans to expand it if it’s successful.

Meta didn’t confirm how lucrative the payments will be or how each payment amount would be determined.

The new program mirrors those at other content-based social media platforms like Google’s YouTube and Meta‘s Instagram.

Threads’ monetization program could help Meta expand the fledgling site, which recently passed 150 million monthly active users. The plan also could incentivize users from Meta’s other platforms to move to Threads.

Threads’ main social media rival, X, rolled out a user monetization program last year to boost premium subscriptions. While users must pay to get paid at X, Threads remains a free-to-use platform, which could help it in the long run.
