Somalis on Welfare Are No Different Than Poor White Folks in Appalachia – HotAir

I’m going to carry on with a theme here, as I heard some pretty astonishing statistics heading to the periodontist office this afternoon (Like that wasn’t going to be painful enough, right?).

Feast your eyes on these numbers out of the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) concerning the number of Somali households on welfare compared to the native US households in Minnesota. And, for giggles, they even broke out a third column that quantifies the number of Somali households who remain on welfare in the state after they’ve been residents for at least TEN YEARS.

HOLY CRAP

Their data is absolutely damning. They also provide a clear timeline of where it all started and the numbers involved.

One of the main critiques of post-1965 immigration to the U.S. is that it has worsened the problems of poverty, school dropout, and welfare dependency. Allowing in immigrants who struggle with these problems adds to the social burden and makes helping impoverished Americans more difficult.

The burden added by immigration varies widely across the U.S., but there is perhaps no starker case than that of Somalis in Minnesota. As Figure 1 indicates, there were virtually no Somalis in Minnesota in 1990, but over 10,000 appeared over the following decade, largely as refugees from Somalia’s clan wars.1 The Somali-ancestry population in Minnesota would triple by 2010 and continue to grow. In 2024, in the wake of the immigration surge of the preceding four years, people of Somali ancestry in Minnesota numbered over 75,000. The population has become especially visible because of its concentration in Minneapolis, where tension between rival Somali clans is rumored to have influenced the city’s recent mayoral election.2

The contrast between Somalis and native Minnesotans could hardly be greater. The human development index — a composite indicator of health, income, and education — routinely ranks Minnesota among the top states in the U.S., comparable to the Scandinavian countries from which a large share of Minnesotans derive their ancestry.3 Consequently, the arrival of impoverished Somalis has created large disparities. Based on 10 years of data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey (ACS), the analysis below details those disparities.

Welfare. The U.S. has an extensive welfare system targeted at low-income families. Somalis in Minnesota are therefore likely to be major consumers of means-tested anti-poverty benefits, which Figure 2 confirms. While just 6 percent of native households in Minnesota receive cash welfare — including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Supplement Security Income, and general assistance — 27 percent of Somali households do. The disparities are even greater for food and medical care, with over half of Somali households receiving food stamps and nearly three-quarters using Medicaid. Altogether, 81 percent of Somali households consume some form of welfare, compared to 21 percent of native households.5 Somalis with 10 years of residency have welfare consumption rates that are only marginally lower than the Somali population as a whole…

And their findings are concise.

  • More than half (52 percent) of children in Somali immigrant homes in Minnesota live in poverty, while only 8 percent of children in native-headed homes are in poverty.
  • One in eight children in poverty in Minnesota lives in a Somali immigrant home.
  • About 39 percent of working-age Somalis have no high school diploma, compared to just 5 percent of natives.
  • Among working-age adult Somalis who have lived in the U.S. for more than 10 years, half still cannot speak English “very well”.
  • About 54 percent of Somali-headed households in Minnesota receive food stamps, and 73 percent of Somali households have at least one member on Medicaid. The comparable figures for native households are 7 percent and 18 percent.
  • Nearly every Somali household with children (89 percent) receives some form of welfare.
  • Although Somalis have recently been implicated in welfare fraud, any population with poverty rates as high as theirs will qualify for extensive means-tested aid. The best way to reduce immigrant consumption of welfare is not simply to crack down on fraud, but to reduce the number of new arrivals who have low earning power.

Unsurprisingly, to CNN’s Abby Phillip, it’s not fair to pick on the immigrants unless you have figures for the number of poor in Appalachia and Alabama who are also on benefits.

There would probably be more money to assist AMERICAN CITIZENS IN NEED if people like Abby Phillip weren’t more concerned about importing the Third World and seeing to their needs first and for the rest of their lives, apparently.

Then again, Americans are not that important to progressives unless one mistakenly gets scooped up and released by ICE – then it’s a BFD.

CBS News has gotten hold of a tranche of trial documents detailing what one of the Minnesota-based Somali fraud rings spent their ill-gotten lucre on, and it sure wasn’t lifting their fellow clan tribesmen out of poverty.

The criminals seem to like shiny objects.

Luxury cars, private villas and overseas wire transfers: CBS News obtained dozens of files and photos that reveal how Minnesota fraudsters blew through hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars as part of one of the biggest COVID-era fraud schemes.

The files document a spending spree in which defendants, many of Somali descent, took taxpayer money meant to feed hungry children and used it to buy cars, property and jewelry. Videos show them popping champagne at an opulent Maldives resort. In a text message, one defendant boasts: “You are gonna be the richest 25 year old InshaAllah [God willing].”

The documents feature exhibits from a recent federal trial, many of which are being made public by CBS News for the first time. The exhibits include:

  • A confirmation email for a stay in an overwater villa with a private pool at Radisson Blu Resort Maldives
  • Lakefront property in Minnesota
  • Receipts showing wire transfers to China and East Africa
  • First class tickets to Istanbul and Amsterdam
  • A 2021 Porsche Macan
  • Stacks of cash, texted between defendants

What a fun bunch, huh?

Just like Loretta Lynn’s coal mining family in the Kentucky hills.

Now, the network is still downplaying claims that the fraudsters sent money to Al-Shabaab terrorists – ‘no evidence’ – but, by golly, if they don’t undercut their own argument in the article.

I’m sure it’s all coincidental. Every well-connected Somali has peeps in mainland China he needs to send some cha-ching to every now and then…don’t you?

…A CBS News review of the files shows that defendants wired millions in stolen funds overseas, including to banks and companies in China. Officials said finding the ultimate recipients of money routed through China will be challenging because it can be an investigative black hole.

The defendants also transferred nearly $3 million to accounts in Kenya.

Abdiaziz Shafii Farah, 36, who was sentenced to 28 years in prison last month for his role in the scheme, made six separate wire transfers worth more than $1 million to banks in China between February and July 2021, according to records reviewed by CBS News.

In one text, Farah instructed someone to “please send $1000 to Mogadishu bakara,” an apparent reference to a one-time al Shabaab stronghold that was the site of the infamous 1993 “Black Hawk Down” incident in which 18 American servicemembers died.

Secretary Scott Bessent says they’re going after the funds to see where they went.

Ilhan Omar says if any evidence is found that money did go to terrorists, then?

SHAME ON THE FBI.

…Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar said Sunday on “Face The Nation with Margaret Brennan” that any link between allegations of fraud by members of the Somali community and terrorism would be a “failure of the FBI.”

“If there was a linkage in the money that they have stolen going to terrorism, then that is a failure of the FBI and our court system in not figuring that out,” Omar said.

It’s not the burglars’ fault that you left the front door unlocked.

I want these thieves gone so bad I can taste it – that’s what they’ve managed to accomplish. Every time Omar or one of her sisters-in-graft opens their mouths, I just seethe at their assumed arrogant sense of privilege and complete lack of grace or gratitude.

I owe them nothing.

I owe no one my country.

And now they are actively interfering with law enforcement.

We are paying them to recreate their tribal fiefdom right here. Supporting and maintaining their non-assimilation.

The citizens of other states with Somali communities, such as Maine and Ohio, are starting to question the vast amount of money going to one group, which, God willing, should lead to all of these handouts to every last foreigner being thoroughly investigated.

The Democrats are bearing down on positive reinforcement through all of the orifices, spouting support for the insupportable.

I’ll leave you with the words of a very wise man.

…All eyes were on Minnesota’s Somali community the past week when it was discovered that, during the COVID years, they were defrauding taxpayers out of billions of dollars by abusing government programs.

Immigration only works when people respect the laws. A billion dollars vanished while Minnesota’s elected officials looked the other way. Taxpayers got scammed, and the people responsible faced zero accountability. This is exactly why the debate is shifting.

I owe NO ONE my country.
