A deer possibly displaced by recent flooding wandered into a Louisville, Kentucky, YMCA, with police escorting it off the property.
The animal got into the building’s lobby on April 8 and initially refused to leave, the Louisville Metro Police Department wrote on social media.
“When officers arrived on scene, we were met with a subject literally staring at us with a ‘deer in the headlights’ look. … The subject was escorted off property,” the police wrote.
The YMCA of Greater Louisville wrote on Facebook that “after being pointed in the right direction, our furry friend learned that a Y membership has many perks, but you still have to sign up.”
YMCA spokeswoman Blair Downs told Louisville’s Courier-Journal that “we’re grateful for the swift response of local authorities and relieved that no one — human or animal — was harmed.”
The police noted an uptick in deer sightings in Louisville, which they attributed to flooding.
On Wednesday, the day after the deer appeared at the YMCA, the Ohio River crested at 36.63 feet in downtown Louisville, the highest level since 1997 and the eighth-highest mark on record, according to the newspaper.
