A recent survey brought to light a concerning health issue affecting the United States: nearly one-third of Americans report living with constant pain.
The study, conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by Ancestral Supplements, found that three out of ten Americans have not experienced a single pain-free day in over a month, with 28% of participants indicating they endure some form of pain daily.
“Living with chronic pain isn’t just about the physical discomfort; it’s about all of the disruptions and inconveniences it brings to our daily lives,” Chris Ricci, Chief Executive Officer at Ancestral Supplements, said in a statement.
“From struggling through morning routines to missing out on activities we love, such as spending time with family, and even compromising our careers at work, which affects our livelihood, the impact is felt in all aspects of our lives. Our research sheds light on these struggles, emphasizing the urgent need for effective solutions,” he said.
Of the 2,000 Americans surveyed, almost half reported suffering from chronic pain, whether diagnosed by a healthcare professional or not. Alarmingly, 26% of those dealing with chronic pain have been battling these conditions for 13 years or more.
The average onset age for chronic aches and pains among Americans is 37, with the most commonly reported areas of discomfort being the legs (39%), neck (29%), and shoulders (29%). Back pain was also highlighted as a significant concern for many respondents.
The impact of the pain is tangible in the daily lives of those affected, with individuals taking an average of seven extra minutes to start their day when waking up in pain. Seeking relief, 75% of sufferers consult with their doctors, while nearly half resort to searching online for solutions.
The survey also shed light on the emotional and physical toll chronic pain takes on individuals. The greatest frustrations include not feeling like themselves (43%), increased fatigue (30%), sleep disturbances (28%), and having to give up cherished activities (27%).
Some Americans are willing to make significant sacrifices to find relief. To live without pain, 25% would give up coffee, 22% would forgo social media, and 18% would abstain from eating cheese.
